Job Title

Rust Software Engineering Intern, Chip Design Tools - Summer

Role Summary

Work across the full stack in Rust and WebAssembly on Studio, a browser-based, collaborative chip-design platform. Own major features end-to-end, from design through shipping, focusing on low-latency editing, real-time collaboration, rendering, and interactive simulation.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship suitable for students or early-career engineers. A portfolio or representative projects (GitHub) is required.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design and implement low-latency interactive editing tools (geometry, routing, input handling).
  • Develop a document model that can be diffed/merged like source code while supporting real-time collaboration.
  • Build and optimize the sync engine that streams edits between clients with correctness and high throughput.
  • Implement a GPU-backed canvas that renders large designs smoothly (spatial indexing, culling, LOD).
  • Integrate interactive and background simulation with streaming waveforms and responsive tooling.
  • Contribute to plugin/scripting systems and integrations that connect designs to fabrication workflows.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience:

  • Strong Rust experience, or serious C++/systems background with the willingness to learn Rust.
  • Solid systems fundamentals: memory, performance, concurrency, and profiling-driven optimization.
  • Track record of non-trivial software built end-to-end; ability to present and discuss your work.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with game engines, real-time tools, ECS, scene graphs, or low-latency input.
  • Electrical engineering background or familiarity with analog/digital concepts.
  • Experience with distributed/realtime systems (replication, CRDTs/OT, write-ahead logs, websockets).
  • Knowledge of geometry, graph/routing algorithms, and spatial data structures.
  • Familiarity with serialization/schema formats (Protobuf, Flatbuffers, Cap’n Proto).
  • Graphics and GPU pipeline experience (WebGPU, wgpu, Vulkan, shaders).

Education Requirements

Not specified.
