Quantum Device Engineer (Silicon Spin-Qubits)
Role Summary
Take end-to-end ownership of key elements of a silicon spin-qubit device platform, covering nanofabrication, cryogenic measurement, and device validation. Work on device process development, characterization, and laboratory infrastructure to produce repeatable hardware that meets system requirements.
Experience Level
Mid-level (Level - Mid-Career). The role specifies approximately 5+ years of hands-on experience in cleanroom and quantum device work.
Responsibilities
Hands-on role combining fabrication, measurement, and engineering to move devices from prototype to reliable hardware. Key responsibilities include:
- Design and fabricate silicon spin-qubit devices using nanofabrication tools.
- Develop and refine process flows and recipes for multi-layer thin films and nanoscale device architectures.
- Identify process bottlenecks, improve reproducibility and yield, and implement process control methodologies.
- Perform structural characterization (optical microscopy, SEM, AFM) and electrical measurements to assess device quality.
- Execute transport and validation experiments at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions.
- Collaborate with theorists, device physicists, materials scientists, and systems engineers to translate requirements into hardware solutions.
- Contribute to experimental strategy, roadmap planning, and architecture decisions.
- Maintain strong documentation habits and communicate technical topics across disciplines.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and practical experience required to perform the role; preferred items listed separately.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in a cleanroom environment with the ability to independently design, fabricate, and iterate nanoscale device structures.
- Proven expertise in nanofabrication methods: electron-beam lithography and/or photolithography, thin-film deposition (evaporation, sputtering, ALD), and wet/dry etching.
- Experience with semiconductor processing, preferably silicon-based platforms.
- Experience in electrical characterization of nano-devices and experimental validation workflows.
- Familiarity with low-temperature measurements and cryogenic equipment (cryostats, dilution refrigerators).
- Knowledge of measurement techniques such as transport measurements, charge sensing, and RF reflectometry is beneficial.
- Proficiency in scientific programming and data analysis (e.g., Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW) for visualization and experimental control.
- Strong documentation practices and clear cross-discipline communication skills.

- Track record of scientific or technical impact (publications, patents, or equivalent contributions).
- Experience building lab systems, processes, and standards from scratch in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to make engineering trade-offs that balance immediate execution with long-term scalability.
Education Requirements
MSc or PhD in Physics, Nanotechnology, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field with relevant experience in silicon spin qubits or comparable quantum device platforms.
