Job Title

Optical DSP Design Engineer

Role Summary

Design and implement digital signal processing algorithms and models for high-speed optical transceivers. Collaborate with ASIC, firmware, and verification teams to ensure reliable silicon implementation.

Onsite roles located in Ottawa, ON and Vancouver, BC, Canada. Salary range: $150,000–$250,000 CAD annually.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Minimum of two years of industry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

The role focuses on developing, simulating, and validating DSP components for optical communication systems and preparing algorithms for ASIC implementation.

  • Research, develop, and evaluate DSP algorithms for high-speed optical communication systems.
  • Design and optimize DSP blocks: adaptive equalization, timing recovery, carrier phase recovery, polarization demultiplexing, and nonlinear compensation.
  • Build and run system-level simulation models of optical links; evaluate algorithm performance under realistic channel conditions.
  • Analyze effects of noise, chromatic dispersion, polarization, and hardware non-idealities.
  • Verify and optimize algorithm performance with floating-point and fixed-point simulations.
  • Develop bit-accurate and cycle-accurate models to support ASIC implementation.
  • Document designs and work closely with ASIC, firmware, and verification teams for silicon delivery.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and relevant experience; preferred items noted where applicable.

  • Strong theoretical background in digital signal processing and digital communications.
  • Experience developing DSP algorithms for high-speed communication systems.
  • Experience with floating-point and fixed-point simulation and model development (bit- and cycle-accurate).
  • Programming experience in C/C++, Python, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Experience modeling communication systems and optical components/electrical frontends used in transceivers.
  • Familiarity with forward error correction (FEC) schemes used in communications (preferred).
  • Familiarity with Verilog or VHDL is a plus (preferred).
  • Experience with version control systems such as GitHub (preferred).
  • Team-oriented with a focus on delivering first-product objectives.

Education Requirements

Preferred: Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Mathematics. Industry experience (minimum two years preferred) is valued; no explicit "equivalent experience" language specified.
