Hardware Engineer, System Design

Role Summary

Lead system architecture design for Normal’s AI compute hardware across boards, chassis, interconnects, and rack-scale systems, from concept through integration and deployment.

Collaborate with hardware, software, and external partners to translate workload requirements into system-level designs that meet performance, power, thermal, and scalability targets.

Responsibilities

Own system-level architecture and drive technical decisions across components and scale.

  • Lead hardware system architecture from concept, requirements, and specification through design reviews, integration, and production deployment.
  • Translate workload and performance requirements into hardware design decisions and system topology.
  • Design across boards, chassis, and rack-scale platforms, including power, thermal, interconnects, and networking.
  • Define and own bring-up, system integration, validation, and qualification strategy.
  • Evaluate partner and vendor designs against requirements; identify technical gaps and schedule risks early.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience:

  • Proven experience architecting complex compute hardware systems, including server- and rack-scale designs.
  • Track record taking hardware systems from early requirements and architecture through specification, integration, bring-up, validation, and production deployment.
  • Experience working with ODMs, suppliers, and hardware partners: reviewing designs, defining technical requirements, and driving resolution of technical issues.
  • System-level judgment on topology, power delivery, thermal design, and scalable interconnects.
  • Ability to collaborate across hardware, software, and cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience designing high-performance AI compute systems at server and rack scale.
  • Experience bringing novel hardware architectures into production-scale compute systems.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field is required. An advanced degree (MS/PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
