Job Title

Firmware Engineer

Role Summary

Develop low-level firmware that runs on an SoC microcontroller to provide an API between Normal Computing's AI acceleration hardware and higher-level software. Work with hardware and software teams to debug across simulation, RTL, and physical prototypes and to deliver production-quality firmware and development tooling.

Normal builds applied AI silicon and software; this role focuses on firmware that interfaces with novel AI acceleration architectures.

Experience Level

Mid-level (typically 3–7 years). The posting requests 5+ years of firmware development experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include firmware development, tooling, verification, and cross-discipline collaboration.

  • Design and implement firmware for an embedded processor on an SoC to expose an API for higher-level software.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to define and specify API and firmware requirements.
  • Select, acquire, and configure development tools (compilers, simulators, debuggers) and maintain multi-environment workflows (software simulation, RTL simulation, hardware).
  • Develop verification and stress-test plans and build environments to ensure production-quality firmware.
  • Debug firmware across prototype and ASIC platforms.

Requirements

Must-have qualifications and skills are listed below; optional skills are noted under "Nice-to-have."

  • Must-have: 5+ years of firmware development experience.
  • Must-have: Experience specifying and building a firmware development environment for a shipping product (compilers, debuggers, simulators, toolchains).
  • Must-have: Proven expertise in firmware languages and target architectures and experience debugging in prototyping and ASIC environments.
  • Must-have: Ability to interface effectively with hardware and software teams and to document and specify APIs.
  • Must-have: Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-have:

  • RISC-V experience.
  • FPGA experience and in-circuit debugging.
  • Experience with AI acceleration hardware.
  • Hands-on use of LLMs or agentic tools in development workflows.

Education Requirements

Not specified.
