Job Title

Fab Software Engineering Intern - Summer

Role Summary

Summer internship on the Fab team to build full-stack applications, tools, and infrastructure for a software-defined semiconductor fab. The role is hands-on and multi-domain: work ranges from control software for fabrication equipment to data analysis and developer tools that help engineers run and improve the fab.

Preferred commitment is 4–8 months starting in May or June. This is a rapid-iteration environment focused on building and testing features quickly.

Experience Level

Internship / Entry-level position. Preferred 4–8 month commitment beginning in May or June.

Responsibilities

The intern will design, implement, and maintain software used to operate and develop the fab.

  • Develop frontend and backend, data-driven applications to run and monitor fab operations.
  • Implement control and sequencing software for fabrication equipment.
  • Build data pipelines and tooling for process development and analysis.
  • Ship prototypes quickly, iterate on features based on testing and engineer feedback.
  • Collaborate with engineers across hardware and software teams to integrate systems.

Requirements

Key skills and qualifications for successful candidates. Portfolio (e.g., GitHub) showing projects is required.

Must-have
  • Strong programming skills in Rust and Go, or TypeScript plus a strong desire to learn other languages.
  • Solid understanding of systems fundamentals: memory, performance, concurrency.
  • Experience building non-trivial software projects from scratch (personal, academic, or professional).
  • Interest in databases, visualization, or data processing pipelines.
  • Ability to comply with U.S. export control restrictions that apply to the role.
Nice-to-have
  • Experience with interactive design or prototyping tools (Figma, Blender, CAD, KiCad) or scientific computing environments.
  • Familiarity with schema evolution, database migrations, or serialization formats such as Protobuf.
  • Understanding of collaborative or distributed systems (CRDTs, OT, WebSockets).
  • Exposure to advanced 2D/3D visualization, simulation, or novel user interfaces.
  • Appreciation for systems and software engineering texts (examples: SICP, Designing Data-Intensive Applications).

Education Requirements

Pursuing a BS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent demonstrated skill in software engineering (portfolio or comparable practical experience accepted in lieu of degree).
