Embedded Software Engineering Intern - Winter

Role Summary

Winter internship to develop firmware and applications that run semiconductor fabrication equipment. You will join an integrated engineering team working on hardware/software system bring-up for high-performance tools with tight requirements across structures, optics, fluids, heat transfer, and chemistry.

Internship begins in January with a preferred commitment of 4–8 months; work is on-site at company offices.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include developing embedded control software and supporting system bring-up and data systems:

  • Develop real-time Linux applications and microcontroller firmware (Rust encouraged) for control of fabrication equipment.
  • Bring up and validate high-performance tools and end-to-end systems across hardware and software.
  • Build backend systems for capturing, storing, and analyzing semiconductor process data.
  • Implement diagnostics, tests, and debugging tools for embedded systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams (mechanical, optics, fluids, process) to meet system requirements.
  • Document designs, procedures, and test results.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and application requirements:

  • Proficiency in Python, C, and C++.
  • Low-level systems programming experience and strong understanding of embedded systems and OS concepts (Linux/RTOS).
  • Microcontroller programming experience and familiarity with peripherals (ADC, GPIO, PWM, SPI, I2C).
  • Experience with end-to-end system bring-up and debugging of integrated hardware/software systems.
  • Portfolio required (e.g. GitHub) demonstrating projects you've built and code quality.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with electronics and feedback control systems.
  • Proficiency in Rust.

Education Requirements

Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar field.
