Grid Operations Architect
Role Summary
Lead the technical architecture and multi-year strategy for Siemens' global Engineering Grid Computing Services, scaling and modernizing a multi-site high-performance compute fabric that supports EDA workloads. This role owns the migration to a hierarchical scheduler, consolidation of scheduler platforms, automation, observability, and capacity planning to reach near‑million core scale.
This position combines strategic architecture, vendor liaison, and hands-on infrastructure design while coordinating across networking, storage, cloud, and service teams. Employment is subject to U.S. export control rules (ITAR/EAR) and may require U.S. Person status or export license.
Experience Level
Level: Senior. The role expects approximately 15+ years of progressive systems engineering/infrastructure experience with at least 5 years in architecture or technical leadership.
Responsibilities
Drive the architectural vision, migrations, and operational excellence for a globally distributed HPC/grid service.
- Own the multiyear architectural roadmap and phased migration from AGE to a hierarchical Accelerator scheduler to scale capacity toward ~1M cores.
- Design scalable grid topologies, scheduling frameworks, resource-management strategies, and consolidation approaches to standardize tooling and policies.
- Lead capacity planning, forecasting, and economic justification aligned to utilization and procurement governance.
- Architect hybrid and cloud-burst strategies to augment on-prem capacity while meeting latency and data locality needs of EDA workloads.
- Define fault-tolerant, self-healing architectures and drive automation to reduce manual operational toil by target >50%.
- Specify and implement observability and analytics (Elastic Stack, Grafana, BI) and AI-assisted alerting to move from reactive to predictive operations.
- Lead pilots for emerging technologies (containerized workloads, GPU/accelerator scheduling, next-gen schedulers) and vendor engagements.
- Establish architectural standards, reference designs, governance, change management, and security/compliance for grid operations.
- Present proposals and ROI analyses to senior leadership; mentor and raise team capabilities through cross-training and knowledge transfer.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required to perform this role.
- 15+ years of systems engineering, infrastructure architecture, or HPC/grid operations experience; 5+ years in architecture or technical leadership.
- Hands-on expertise with at least two workload schedulers among Altair Grid Engine, Altair Accelerator, IBM LSF, SLURM or equivalent.
- Proven experience designing and operating large multi-site compute environments (100k+ cores) and performing scheduler migrations or platform consolidations at production scale.
- Strong Linux systems knowledge (RHEL/CentOS), including kernel tuning, performance optimization, and fleet management.
- Infrastructure automation and tooling experience: Python, Perl, Shell scripting and modern IaC/CI-CD (Ansible, Terraform, GitLab CI/CD).
- Knowledge of networking (TCP/IP, DNS, NFS/GPFS, InfiniBand), storage architectures, virtualization, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI) for HPC.
- Demonstrated ability to develop roadmaps, capacity models, stakeholder communication, and present to executive audiences.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with container orchestration for HPC (Docker, Kubernetes, Singularity) and GPU/accelerator scheduling.
- Experience with observability and analytics at scale (Elastic Stack, Grafana, Prometheus, Power BI) and geo-distributed deployments.
- Familiarity with AI/ML operations, database systems for operations data, ITIL 4 processes, and financial modelling/TCO analysis for infrastructure.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred. The posting allows equivalent practical experience in lieu of degree. Preferred certifications include cloud platform certificates (AWS/Azure/GCP/OCI).
