Embedded Software Engineering Intern - Summer

Role Summary

The Embedded Software Engineering Intern will develop firmware, real-time applications, and backend systems used to operate semiconductor fabrication equipment. The role sits on an integrated engineering team responsible for bringing up high-performance tools and integrating hardware and software.

Summer internship begins in May or June with a preferred commitment of 4–8 months; compensation is hourly (annualized equivalent range shown).

Experience Level

Entry-level internship suitable for current undergraduate or graduate students. Practical hands-on project experience is expected.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on embedded software, system bring-up, and data systems for fab equipment.

  • Develop real-time Linux applications and microcontroller firmware (primarily Rust) for equipment control.
  • Bring up and integrate hardware/software systems with strict performance and reliability requirements.
  • Implement drivers and firmware for microcontroller peripherals (ADC, GPIO, PWM, SPI, I2C).
  • Build backend systems to capture, store, and analyze semiconductor process data.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, optics, fluid, thermal, and process engineers on testing and debugging.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and evidence of hands-on work. Nice-to-have items listed separately.

  • Proficiency in Python, C, and C++.
  • Low-level systems programming experience and knowledge of embedded systems and OS concepts (Linux/RTOS).
  • Microcontroller programming experience and familiarity with peripherals (ADC, GPIO, PWM, SPI, I2C).
  • Portfolio (for example a GitHub) showing projects and practical software/hardware work.
  • Ability to work on-site in Austin or San Francisco; employment contingent on ability to comply with U.S. export-control requirements.
  • Nice-to-have: familiarity with electronics and feedback control systems; proficiency in Rust.

Education Requirements

Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a similar technical field.
