Electrical Engineering Intern - Summer

Role Summary

Summer internship on the electrical engineering team building hardware for chip fabrication tools. You will design and prototype electronics for lithography, deposition, motion control, vacuum, and plasma systems and work with mechanical, software, and process engineers to integrate and test systems.

Expected deliverables include schematic and PCB design, bring-up and testing, prototypes that move toward production, and clear documentation of designs and test results.

Experience Level

Entry-level internship. Intended for current undergraduate or graduate students; preferred commitment 4–8 months beginning in May or June.

Responsibilities

Hands-on engineering and cross-functional integration focused on building and testing hardware for fab equipment.

  • Design PCB assemblies and electrical systems: schematic capture, PCB layout, bring-up, testing, integration, and documentation.
  • Prototype and iterate quickly to validate concepts and move working prototypes toward production readiness.
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, and process teams to gather requirements and define targets when requirements are missing or ambiguous.
  • Perform analysis and simulations to evaluate electrical designs and choose between off-the-shelf and custom solutions.
  • Identify technical problems, propose solutions, and implement fixes through testing and validation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and hands-on ability to contribute to hardware projects immediately.

  • Strong foundation in electrical engineering concepts and practical skills: PCB design tools (KiCad or Altium), microcontrollers, embedded systems, digital circuits, and circuit bring-up.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience and the ability to iterate through design cycles quickly.
  • Ability to learn quickly, troubleshoot complex technical issues, and work independently on investigations.
  • Experience with testing, integration, and documenting hardware designs.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with semiconductor processing (ALD, CVD, PVD, photolithography, etc.).
  • Experience with electromechanical assembly design and analysis from coursework, internships, or personal projects.

Education Requirements

Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering (electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline).
