Automation Software Engineering Intern - Winter
Role Summary
Winter internship on an integrated engineering team building semiconductor fabrication equipment. Work focuses on automation and robotics control software that improves robot efficiency and scales fabrication processes.
fab2 is an early-stage hardware startup with offices in Austin, TX and San Francisco, CA. The internship begins in January with a preferred commitment of 4–8 months.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Internship). Intended for current students or recent graduates; preferred 4–8 month commitment starting in January.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities for the intern role include:
- Develop real-time applications on Linux (primary languages include Rust) for controlling semiconductor fabrication equipment.
- Design algorithms and build simulations for robotic control systems, including path planning and trajectory control.
- Implement, test, and iterate motor controller and robotic control software in hardware-in-the-loop and lab environments.
- Debug hardware/software integration issues and collaborate across mechanical, electrical, and software teams.

- Must-have: Proficiency in Python, C, or C++.
- Must-have: Demonstrated experience writing robotics software.
- Must-have: Portfolio (for example a GitHub) showing projects you built and evidence of software engineering quality; portfolio required to apply.
- Must-have: Ability to take ownership on interdisciplinary hardware-software projects and work in a hands-on lab environment.
- Must-have: Availability to start in January and commit to the preferred internship length (4–8 months).
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with feedback control systems.
- Nice-to-have: Experience developing computer vision applications.
- Nice-to-have: Proficiency in Rust.
- Any job offer will be contingent on the applicant's ability to comply with U.S. export control requirements.
Education Requirements
Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a similar technical field.
