Job Title

Analog/Mixed-Signal Design Engineer - High-Speed Optical Transceivers

Role Summary

Design and productize high-speed analog/mixed-signal integrated circuits for optical transceivers as part of a cross-functional team including photonics, systems, packaging, and product engineering. Work spans architecture, circuit design, modeling, lab characterization, and production validation for electro‑optical interconnects.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Typical experience guidance: roughly 3+ years (Ph.D.) or 5+ years (M.S.) industry experience in relevant IC design domains.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include circuit design, system collaboration, and validation for high‑speed optical I/O.

  • Design, simulate, and model high‑speed analog/mixed‑signal circuits for transceiver front‑ends (TIA, CTLE, drivers, PLLs, PVT sensors, DAC/ADC, bias circuits) in advanced CMOS or SiGe BiCMOS targeting multi‑tens‑GHz bandwidth and ultra‑low power.
  • Collaborate with photonics and system architects to derive system and block specifications and partition functions across analog, digital, and photonic domains.
  • Perform IC floor‑planning, layout guidance, and parasitic modeling for high‑speed signal paths.
  • Model package parasitics and co‑optimize electrical/optical performance for co‑packaged optics (CPO) or integrated optical engines.
  • Evaluate, characterize, and debug electrical and optical building blocks in the lab using high‑speed measurement equipment.
  • Develop and support automated test setups for device and system‑level validation, and work with manufacturing/product teams on production test, qualification, and reliability validation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and tools for immediate contribution; a short list of desirable extras follows.

  • Must-have: Hands-on experience with Cadence Virtuoso/Spectre, Keysight ADS, or equivalent design and circuit‑simulation tools.
  • Must-have: Strong design expertise in at least two areas such as laser drivers, TIAs, CTLE, filters, LNAs, or PLLs.
  • Must-have: Proficiency with high‑speed test and measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, VNAs, spectrum analyzers, BERTs) and practical lab debugging skills.
  • Must-have: Solid understanding of high‑speed signaling (NRZ, PAM4), link‑budget analysis, and parasitic effects on signal integrity.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with SerDes, UCIe, or optical interconnects targeting >10–30 GHz and with EIC/PIC characterization and validation.
  • Nice-to-have: Knowledge of advanced packaging for optical engines, co‑packaged optics (CPO), and heterogeneous integration.

Education Requirements

Master's (M.S.) or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on high‑speed analog/mixed‑signal ICs, RF ICs, or electro‑optical integrated circuits. Experience guidance in the posting: typically a minimum of 5 years industry experience for M.S. candidates or 3 years for Ph.D. candidates.
