Role Summary

Technical lead responsible for defining and executing VLSI physical-design architectures and methodologies across multiple platforms and teams. Provides technical leadership for ASIC/SoC physical implementation, influences product strategy, and mentors engineering teams.

Experience Level

Senior - typically 10+ years of relevant VLSI/ASIC physical-design experience.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include architecture, technical leadership, design reviews, and mentoring across multiple projects.

  • Define organization-wide VLSI physical-design architectures, methodologies, and implementation flows.
  • Review and evaluate designs and project activities for compliance with technology and development standards.
  • Provide technical leadership and accountability across multiple project teams and external partners.
  • Influence executive and cross-functional decisions related to cost, schedule, and technical direction.
  • Mentor and develop less-experienced engineers and contribute to selection of future technical leaders.
  • Identify emerging VLSI technologies and initiate new projects or programs.
  • Contribute to industry standards and represent the organization in technical forums where applicable.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, experience, and behaviors for successful performance in the role.

  • Extensive leadership experience in VLSI physical design and ASIC implementation flows.
  • Proven expertise in static timing analysis and timing signoff, timing constraints and validation, and hierarchical/full-chip timing closure.
  • Experience with synthesis, netlist quality analysis, and ECO implementation.
  • Experience with clocking, I/O, test, and other timing-closure challenges for high-performance designs.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard EDA tools (examples: Synopsys Fusion Compiler, Design Compiler, PrimeTime, Formality; Cadence RTL Compiler, Genus, LEC).
  • Experience developing automation, implementation flows, and design methodologies for advanced process technologies and complex ASICs.
  • Strong programming/scripting and hardware description language (HDL) skills for flow automation and analysis.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and across disciplines.
  • Proven ability to mentor engineers, influence cross-functional decisions, and communicate effectively with executives and partners.
  • Demonstrated track record of technical leadership (patents, publications, or presentations) is preferred.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field - or equivalent practical experience. Coursework or background in VLSI design or VLSI concepts is noted as relevant.
