VLSI Physical Design CAD Intern - Summer 2027
Role Summary
Internship within the VLSI Physical Design (CAD) team focused on tool development, flow automation, and performance improvement of NVIDIA's physical design flows. The role works with internal engineering teams and EDA vendors to evaluate tools and implement automation and quality controls.
Experience Level
Entry-level (Intern). Targeted at current graduate students (MS/PhD) in technical disciplines.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities for the intern include developing tooling, automating flows, and supporting tool evaluation and quality efforts.
- Develop in-house tools and automation for VLSI physical design flows.
- Implement and maintain flow automation, quality-control checks, and performance improvements.
- Assist in EDA tool evaluations and collaborate with EDA vendors on issues and enhancements.
- Apply CAD algorithms to problems in placement, routing, timing, clocking, power, and noise as needed.
- Document results, report findings, and work with engineers across design and verification teams.
Requirements
Key technical expectations and desirable skills.
- Must-have: Basic understanding of device models, process technology, timing, noise, and power in chip design.
- Preferred: Programming/scripting experience (Python, C/C++, Perl).
- Preferred: Analytical familiarity with placement, routing, timing, clock, power, noise, and DFM concepts.
- Preferred: Knowledge of algorithms and data structures relevant to VLSI CAD.
- Nice-to-have: Hands-on experience with EDA tools (Synopsys DC/ICC2/STAR-RC/PT/ICV, Cadence Genus/Innovus/Quantus/Tempus/PVS, ANSYS Seahawk/Redhawk) or similar.
- Nice-to-have: Experience applying DL/ML techniques to projects.
Education Requirements
Pursuing an MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field (MS/PhD).
