Job Title

Video Codec Digital Circuit Design Engineer

Role Summary

Responsible for architecting and implementing digital hardware blocks for video encoders and decoders within Qualcomm's ASIC engineering organization. The role focuses on translating video codec standards into efficient micro-architectures, building models for performance and power estimation, and integrating codec IP into SoC subsystems.

Based in Taipei; the role collaborates with architecture, verification, physical design, firmware, and systems teams and supports pre-silicon and post-silicon validation.

Experience Level

Mid-level. No specific years of experience were stated in the posting.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Architect, design, and optimize hardware blocks for video encoding/decoding (motion estimation/compensation, transform/quantization, entropy coding, in-loop filters, rate control datapaths).
  • Translate video standards (H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, AV1, VVC) into scalable, configurable micro-architectures and hardware algorithms.
  • Develop C/C++/SystemC models for performance, accuracy, and power estimation to guide RTL implementation.
  • Collaborate with systems and architecture teams to evaluate codec KPIs: throughput, latency, memory bandwidth, and quality metrics.
  • Work with verification teams to define test plans, functional coverage, and debug infrastructure for robust pre-silicon validation.
  • Integrate codec IP into SoC subsystems and coordinate with memory subsystems, firmware interfaces, and NoC/fabric components.
  • Partner with physical design teams to meet PPA targets through timing-aware micro-architecture, pipeline optimization, and clock/power domain planning.
  • Support post-silicon bring-up, analyze real chip performance, and propose architectural or firmware updates when needed.

Requirements

Must-have skills and relevant experience inferred from the job description.

  • Must-have: Practical experience with digital hardware design for video codecs and understanding of codec datapaths and algorithms.
  • Must-have: Experience creating C/C++/SystemC models for performance and power estimation.
  • Must-have: Familiarity with video standards such as H.264/AVC, H.265/HEVC, AV1, or VVC.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with SoC integration, memory subsystem interaction, firmware interfaces, and NoC/fabric.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience collaborating with physical design and verification teams, and with post-silicon bring-up and performance analysis.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Science, Engineering, or a related field.
