USB Systems Engineer

Role Summary

As a USB systems engineer on AMD's Client and Gaming systems team, you will own USB feature requirements and drive feature enablement from requirements definition through pre- and post-silicon validation. The role covers hardware, firmware and software debugging, test definition, and coordination with internal teams and external vendors.

Work focuses on reliable high-speed I/O (USB3/USB4) and associated power delivery and retimer features for client platforms.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

• Enable USB IP, Power Delivery and retimer features on AMD client and gaming systems.
• Use protocol analyzers, software tools and test devices to debug system, hardware and software USB failures.
• Define system-level requirements (board, firmware/software, retimer, power delivery) from USB interface specifications.
• Review internal and external USB technical specifications and define feature lists and test methods for pre- and post-silicon validation.
• Interface with external Power Delivery, retimer and device vendors to enable features and troubleshoot failures.
• Collaborate with multi-functional engineering teams to implement and validate requirements.
• Document findings, communicate status to stakeholders, and support a culture of knowledge sharing.

Requirements

Required and preferred technical skills and attributes:

• Must-have: proven systems enablement and debugging experience for USB or other high-speed I/O; familiarity with USB3/USB4 specifications and pre-/post-silicon bring-up and validation.
• Must-have: skilled in scripting (Perl, Ruby, Shell) and capable of reviewing, debugging and modifying C/C++ firmware.
• Must-have: ability to read circuit schematics and recommend board rework; familiarity with Windows, UEFI and Linux/Unix environments.
• Must-have: strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills; able to work independently and coordinate with vendors and cross-functional teams.
• Nice-to-have: experience with Power Delivery and retimer devices, protocol analyzers and test instrumentation; knowledge of x86 computer architecture.
• Location requirement: This role is based in Markham, Ontario and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering strongly preferred.
