Transceivers & Protocol IP Application Engineer
AlteraJob Title
Transceivers & Protocol IP Application Engineer
Role Summary
Provide technical support and enablement for Altera FPGA transceiver PHYs and protocol IP across the customer design cycle, from architecture and IP selection through implementation, bring-up, validation, and production readiness.
Work with application engineering, sales, silicon design, IP development, software, validation, documentation, and product teams to resolve customer issues, improve product usability, and deliver design examples and training.
Experience Level
Mid-level engineer. The role expects prior professional experience in FPGA applications, high-speed digital design, validation, or field application engineering; no specific years-of-experience were stated.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include hands-on design/debug, customer-facing technical support, and driving product improvements.
- Provide expert guidance on transceiver PHY architecture, IP configuration, clocking, PLL/CDR behavior, resets, equalization, and system integration.
- Support customer designs and bring-up for protocols such as Ethernet, PCIe, JESD204B/C, CPRI/eCPRI, Interlaken, DisplayPort, HDMI, and others as relevant.
- Review customer architectures, schematics, RTL, IP settings, timing reports, simulation results, and hardware measurements; identify risks and recommend remedies.
- Reproduce and isolate customer issues using Quartus Prime, System Console, Signal Tap, Transceiver Toolkit, simulation tools, development kits, and lab equipment.
- Own technical cases end-to-end: problem definition, investigation plan, customer communication, resolution, and closure documentation.
- Collaborate with product and engineering teams to escalate defects with reproducible data and drive corrective actions.
- Develop scripts, test collateral, reference designs, and automation to speed debug and customer adoption.
- Deliver technical training, workshops, demonstrations, and hands-on enablement to customers, partners, sales, and internal teams.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience. Preferred items listed separately.
- Must-have: Professional experience in FPGA applications, high-speed digital design, ASIC/FPGA validation, protocol IP development, field application engineering, or technical customer support.
- Hands-on experience with FPGA design flows and hardware debugging using Quartus Prime or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of high-speed serial interfaces and transceiver concepts: clocking, PLLs, CDRs, resets, equalization, link training, channel bonding, and signal-integrity fundamentals.
- Ability to read and debug RTL, IP configuration files, timing constraints, simulation waveforms, register maps, and hardware logs.
- Proficiency in a hardware description language (Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL).
- Scripting or software-development experience in Python, Tcl, Bash, C, or C++.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, prioritization, technical writing, and customer communication skills.
- Capacity to manage multiple technical issues while maintaining ownership and quality records.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with Altera Agilex/Stratix/Arria/Cyclone devices, Quartus Prime Pro, ModelSim/Questa, board bring-up, BER/eye analysis, and creation of customer-facing documentation or training.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for customer support and workshops.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline (as stated in the posting).
