Job Title

Thermal Design & Validation Engineer

Role Summary

Join AMD's Data Center Platform Engineering Group to develop and validate liquid-cooled thermal solutions for data center GPUs and AI platforms. The role covers concept development, simulation, hands-on laboratory testing, prototype validation, and collaboration with internal teams and external vendors.

Experience Level

Mid-level (no explicit years-of-experience stated)

Responsibilities

Accountabilities for the position include design, validation, testing, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver production-ready liquid cooling solutions.

  • Develop and validate liquid cooling solutions (cold plates, heat sinks, rack-level cooling) for data center GPU/AI platforms.
  • Drive thermal-mechanical solution development from concept through prototype validation and production readiness.
  • Perform thermal simulations and laboratory-based validation testing, including flow, pressure drop, temperature mapping, and thermal performance measurements.
  • Analyze test data, identify thermal bottlenecks, and recommend design improvements.
  • Collaborate with silicon teams, mechanical engineers, system architects, manufacturing partners, and external vendors.
  • Generate technical documentation and communicate findings to engineering stakeholders.
  • Support development and deployment of next-generation liquid-cooled server and rack-level solutions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for product quality, reliability, and time-to-market.

Requirements

Concise list of core expectations and additional preferred skills.

  • Must-have: Practical experience in thermal design and validation of high-power electronics or server platforms, including laboratory testing and thermal performance measurement.
  • Must-have: Proficiency with thermal simulation and analysis workflows and the ability to interpret and act on test data.
  • Must-have: Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering teams, vendors, and manufacturing partners and to drive projects with minimal oversight.
  • Nice-to-have: CFD experience (Icepak, FloTHERM, Ansys Fluent) and flow network/pressure-drop modeling.
  • Nice-to-have: Mechanical CAD skills (Creo, SolidWorks) and understanding of GD&T, manufacturing tolerances, and design-for-manufacturing.
  • Nice-to-have: Familiarity with cold plate manufacturing methods (brazing, skiving, friction stir welding, additive manufacturing) and FEA/statistical analysis for design optimization.
  • Nice-to-have: Experience with instrumentation, telemetry, data acquisition, and automation/data-analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW).
  • Other: Familiarity with Open Compute Project (OCP) standards and modern AI infrastructure architectures is beneficial.
  • Work authorization: This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's or master's degree preferred in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline; master's degrees in Mechanical/Thermal Engineering, Heat Transfer, or Fluid Mechanics are preferred and a doctoral degree is desired. Relevant certifications, research experience, or specialized training in thermal engineering, CFD, liquid cooling, or mechanical design are a plus.
