Job Title
Test Engineering Manager - Production
Role Summary
Lead the design, build, and qualification of Semtech's production test platform for InP gain chips and DFB lasers during a rapid capacity scale-up. Own test architecture, integration with MES and wafer history, and operational traceability. Manage a small team of test engineers and technicians and remain hands-on with bench work, automation code, and process qualification.
Experience Level
Senior-level. 7β12 years of test engineering experience in semiconductor, photonics, or precision-measurement environments, with at least 3 years in a senior or lead capacity.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and operate production test systems that meet throughput, correlation, and quality requirements.
- Define production test platform architecture for die-level, burn-in, and outgoing QC; specify throughput, MTBF, calibration cadence, and capital roadmap.
- Lead DOE and qualification for new fixtures, product introductions, and process changes (GR&R, Cpk, station-to-station tests, drift monitoring).
- Design and build automated test stations: fixture mechanicals, optical alignment (lensed fiber, free-space), TEC stages, electrical interfaces, and environmental control.
- Develop instrument control and automation software and maintain production-grade test code with version control, code review, and documentation.
- Implement robust production data capture and traceability: SQL schema design, parquet sidecars for analytics, failure handling, and linkage to wafer/chip IDs.
- Integrate test systems with MES, wafer history database, and yield analytics; drive improvements to station-to-station correlation and throughput.
- Act as technical authority for test methodology across sites; defend CoC data with customers and lead root-cause investigations on quality escapes.
- Manage and mentor a small team of engineers and technicians, set technical standards, and coordinate with process and product engineering.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and leadership for this role.
- 7β12 years test engineering experience in semiconductor, photonics, or precision-measurement environments; 3+ years in a senior/lead role.
- Hands-on experience with test-station hardware: fixtures, optical alignment, TECs, electrical interfaces, and environmental control.
- Experience developing instrument control and automation software and maintaining production test code.
- Proven experience designing production data capture and traceability (SQL schema design, analytics-friendly data formats, robust failure handling).
- Knowledge of DOE and qualification methods (GR&R, Cpk, station correlation, drift monitoring).
- Familiarity with MES integration and test-floor to analytics workflows.
- Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, and customer-facing technical communication skills.
- Ability to lead a small multidisciplinary team and to work hands-on at the bench.
-
Nice-to-have: experience with parquet or big-data tooling, Python/LabVIEW/C# for instrument control, and prior work with photonics gain chips or DFB lasers.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
