Senior ALU Design Engineer
Role Summary
Design and implement arithmetic operators for RISC‑V instructions (floating‑point, vector, crypto, integer) and collaborate with implementation and physical design teams to meet frequency, area and power targets. The role sits on the processor design team in Cambridge and uses a hybrid work pattern (1 office day per week expected).
Work contributes to high-performance RISC‑V compute blocks used in AI, ML and data‑center applications.

Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Specify, design and implement arithmetic operators for RISC‑V instructions (FP, vector, crypto, integer).
- Optimize operators for timing, area, power and latency.
- Develop unit and formal tests and write tests for new designs.
- Collaborate with physical implementation teams to meet frequency, area and power targets.
- Create high-quality documentation and collaborate across teams and disciplines.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience:
- 2+ years of RTL design or related design experience.
- Academic or professional experience with arithmetic or CPU RTL design in Chisel, Verilog, SystemVerilog or VHDL.
- Experience with at least one object-oriented or functional programming language; willingness to adopt Chisel hardware-generator design.
- Attention to detail and a focus on high-quality code and documentation.
- Ability to work well with others; strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Eligible to work in the United Kingdom; employment contingent on background checks and export-control authorization or obtainable licenses.
Education Requirements
Masters or higher degree in Electronic Engineering or Computer Science with a strong mathematical background, or a degree in a related field with a strong background in code development.
