Technical Staff Engineer - SME
Role Summary
Senior technical subject-matter expert providing application engineering, customer technical support, and design-win support for Microchip's High-Power Solutions business in India. The role focuses on enabling customer designs with high-voltage/high-power semiconductor solutions (SiC, IGBTs, power modules, gate drivers) from concept through production.
Experience Level
Senior — minimum 5 years of relevant experience in applications engineering, power electronics design, or field applications engineering.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership and customer-facing support to enable adoption of Microchip high-power products and influence account strategy.
- Act as regional technical authority for high-power customers, advising on device selection, gate-drive approaches, protection, thermal design, layout, and system optimization.
- Analyze customer power-conversion architectures and resolve performance, reliability, EMI, switching-loss, and integration issues.
- Lead customer design reviews, evaluations, demonstrations, and qualification activities from concept to production release.
- Develop technical collateral: presentations, application notes, reference design recommendations, white papers, and training material.
- Mentor field and applications engineers and support knowledge transfer within regional teams.
- Partner with BDM, sales, product marketing, and applications engineering to qualify opportunities and support design-win activity.
- Provide competitive and market insight based on customer engagements and contribute to account strategies and opportunity forecasting.
- Support evaluation boards, test plans, simulation, loss and thermal analysis, gate-drive design, and validation activities.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required for day-to-day success; desirable items listed separately.
- Minimum 5 years experience in Applications Engineering, Field Applications, power-electronics design, or system architecture.
- Strong hands-on experience with high-voltage/high-power semiconductor technologies including SiC, IGBTs, power modules, and gate drivers.
- Demonstrated expertise in power-conversion systems: topology/device selection, gate-drive design, protection strategies, thermal design, PCB/layout, and system-level optimization.
- Experience supporting customer design activity through evaluation, debugging, validation, qualification, and production release.
- Proficiency with circuit- and system-level simulation tools (SPICE, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent).
- Strong communication and presentation skills for technical and cross-functional audiences; ability to influence technical and business decisions.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with regional BDM, Sales, Product Marketing, and Applications Engineering.
- Familiarity with Indian customer requirements, industry standards, and application trends; willingness to travel within India (0–25%).
Education Requirements
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline. Desirable: Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a closely related field.
