Technical Lead for Embedded Systems Software

Role Summary

Lead development and productization of embedded virtualization and system software, providing technical direction and hands-on implementation for a team of embedded software engineers at GF Netherlands.

Collaborate with architects, hardware and verification teams, product management, customers, and external partners to deliver production-ready software. This is a hybrid role based in Eindhoven (minimum three days per week on-site).

Responsibilities

Lead technical design, implementation, integration, and delivery of production-quality embedded system software. Key responsibilities include:

• Translate system architecture and requirements into software designs, implementation plans, milestones, and acceptance criteria.
• Contribute hands-on to critical features, prototypes, integration, debugging, and code reviews.
• Develop and integrate low-level embedded software: virtualization, RTOS integration, BSPs, device drivers, memory management, interrupt handling, multicore systems, and hardware/software interfaces.
• Drive engineering quality and disciplined practices: automated testing, CI/CD, configuration management, documentation, and release readiness.
• Lead system-level debugging, performance optimization, and root-cause analysis across software and hardware.
• Identify technical and productization risks, drive mitigation plans, and communicate status and trade-offs to stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers through technical guidance, reviews, and knowledge sharing to foster technical excellence and ownership.
• Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support applicable EHS&S requirements.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience:

• Extensive professional experience developing complex embedded and/or systems software with production-quality delivery.
• Proven experience technically leading software engineering teams while remaining hands-on.
• Strong C and/or C++ development experience for embedded, real-time, or resource-constrained systems.
• Strong knowledge of embedded fundamentals: concurrency, synchronization, interrupts, memory management, MMU concepts, multicore systems, boot flows, and HW/SW interfaces.
• Experience with RTOS, hypervisor/virtualization, BSP, and low-level driver development.
• Proven experience productizing embedded software, including integration, verification, automated testing, quality, release, and lifecycle processes.
• Strong system-level debugging and root-cause analysis using debuggers, traces, logs, profiling, and hardware-assisted methods.
• Experience working directly with customers and external development partners; strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience developing virtualization platforms, hypervisors, or RTOS components.
• Deep understanding of embedded processor architectures and multicore operation.
• Experience with safety-critical or high-reliability systems and functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262).
• Experience coordinating development across distributed teams and partners.

Education Requirements

Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
