System Software Engineer – Data Center GPU Compute Diagnostics
NVIDIAJob Title
System Software Engineer – Data Center GPU Compute Diagnostics
Role Summary
Develop low-level diagnostic, stress, and validation software for next-generation data-center GPUs and rack-scale AI systems. The role works close to hardware to exercise and validate compute engines, memory and cache subsystems, NICs, PCIe/NVLink, power delivery, and thermal behavior.
Experience Level
Entry-level / Early-career - typically requires at least 2 years of relevant experience in embedded software, firmware, device drivers, systems software, hardware validation, diagnostics, or silicon bring-up.
Responsibilities
Own well-scoped diagnostic software components from design through implementation, validation, productization, and field support. Collaborate with hardware architects, driver developers, validation and manufacturing teams.
- Develop diagnostic and stress software in C/C++ and Python for complex hardware systems.
- Interface with hardware blocks, firmware, Linux device drivers, registers, telemetry, and low-level debug tools.
- Bring up and validate new silicon and system features on pre-production hardware.
- Create targeted tests for compute engines, memory and cache subsystems, DMA engines, PCIe/NVLink interfaces, power, and thermal behavior.
- Investigate hardware and software failures (memory errors, ECC, data integrity, performance, thermals, voltage/frequency behavior, high-speed interfaces).
- Contribute to workloads ranging from low-level GPU tests to higher-level AI workloads; learn and apply GPU programming where needed.
- Use modern development and analysis tools, including AI-assisted tools where appropriate, to accelerate coding, debugging, and failure analysis.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for successful performance in this role; a short list of preferred skills follows.
- Must-have: 2+ years of experience in embedded software, firmware, Linux device drivers, systems software, hardware validation, diagnostics, or silicon bring-up.
- Must-have: Strong programming skills in C and C++; working proficiency in Python.
- Must-have: Experience developing software that interacts with hardware, firmware, device drivers, hardware registers, or other low-level interfaces.
- Must-have: Experience creating diagnostics, validation tests, stress tests, or manufacturing tests to isolate hardware or system failures.
- Must-have: Good understanding of computer architecture fundamentals: memory, caches, interrupts, DMA, buses, and device I/O.
- Must-have: Strong debugging and cross-boundary problem-solving skills; ability to take ownership and drive problems to completion while collaborating with teams.
- Must-have: Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Nice-to-have: Prior GPU, CUDA, or GEMM experience; familiarity with NCCL, PyTorch-based workloads, high-speed interfaces (PCIe/NVLink), NICs, power/thermal behavior, or rack-scale system bring-up.
Education Requirements
BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
