Job Title

System Modeling Design Engineer

Role Summary

Lead development and application of simulation frameworks for photonic device and system modeling to inform design decisions, predict behavior, and optimize performance across optical and electronic subsystems.

Work with cross-functional design, packaging, electronics, firmware, and DSP teams to correlate models with lab results, improve simulation methodologies, and establish modeling best practices.

Experience Level

Mid-level. Years of experience not specified.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities focus on building, validating, and maintaining high-fidelity system models and enabling simulation-driven design.

  • Lead photonic device and system modeling to support architecture definition and performance optimization.
  • Develop and apply SystemVerilog-based models for optical system-level simulation and co-verification with electronic subsystems.
  • Perform time-domain modeling and simulation using Python and/or Julia to analyze transient behavior, SerDes interactions, DSP algorithms, jitter, noise, and signal integrity.
  • Evaluate system-level trade-offs across photonic and electronic domains with focus on power, performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Build, validate, and maintain multi-physics models (optical, electrical, thermal) across operating conditions, data rates, and process variations.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure accurate co-modeling and robust system integration.
  • Correlate simulation models with lab measurements (high-speed link characterization, BER, silicon/module test data) and refine model accuracy.
  • Identify modeling gaps and establish organization-wide simulation best practices.

Requirements

Core technical skills and experience required or strongly expected; preferred items are noted.

  • Experience with SystemVerilog and mixed-signal/system-level modeling frameworks for optical-electrical co-simulation and verification (required).
  • Proficiency in time-domain simulation using Python and/or Julia for building simulation frameworks, numerical analysis, and model automation (required).
  • Proven ability to correlate simulation results with laboratory measurements, including high-speed link characterization and BER performance (required).
  • Strong understanding of multi-physics interactions (optical, electrical, thermal) and experience building multi-physics models (required).
  • Experience evaluating system-level trade-offs for power, performance, reliability, and cost (required).
  • Preferred: Hands-on experience with photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical, VPIphotonics, OptiSystem, COMSOL, or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Experience modeling high-speed optical links, SerDes behavior, DSP algorithms (equalization, CDR), jitter, noise, and signal integrity in production or advanced R&D environments.

Education Requirements

PhD or Master’s degree in a related discipline preferred.
