Job Title
System Engineer
Role Summary
Design and develop optical sensor products from sensor physics through integration with mechanics, firmware and production. Work within an interdisciplinary team on optical Time-of-Flight / LiDAR systems, spectrometers and detector technologies for industrial sensing and optical communications.
Responsibilities span system specification, modeling, hands-on lab validation, production transfer, and contribution to technical documentation and IP.
Experience Level
Mid-level. Requires 5+ years of related experience in optoelectronic industrial R&D.
Responsibilities
Key duties include:
- Lead product design from sensor physics through optical/mechanical integration and application firmware.
- System engineering for sensor applications (ToF/LiDAR, spectrometers, new detector technologies).
- Model sensor physics (active/passive optical properties) and develop signal-processing algorithms.
- Define system specifications based on customer requirements.
- Plan and manage projects: define work packages, schedule, budgets, and status reporting.
- Plan and execute laboratory validation and qualification: electrical and optical characterization, prototyping, and test automation.
- Bridge system concepts with detailed ASIC and software requirements.
- Support production process definition with suppliers and manufacturing partners.
- Prepare product documentation, technical specifications, and application notes.
- Contribute to the company patent portfolio.
Requirements
Core technical and professional requirements. Education details are listed under Education Requirements below.
-
Must-have: Strong background in optical semiconductor design, sensor physics, processing and production.
-
Must-have: Proven laboratory experience in prototyping and electrical/optical characterization and test setup integration.
-
Must-have: Experience with embedded systems or IC design and testing.
-
Must-have: Practical experience automating measurement routines using scripting/programming (e.g., Python) and/or C++, C#.
-
Must-have: Experience with structured project management methodologies.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience in sensor system algorithm definition and implementation; ability to define new architectures.
-
Nice-to-have: Broad interdisciplinary interest and ability to interface with electronics, optics, mechanical structures, and communication systems.
- English communication skills, verbal and written; willingness to learn German.
Education Requirements
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Information Technology with a focus on optical semiconductors, sensors, or optical transceivers.
