Role Summary
Join a silicon hardware engineering team for a full-time summer internship working on custom in-house ASIC and hardware deployed on-orbit. Interns work closely with a mentor and cross-disciplinary teams (systems, firmware, architecture, design, validation, product engineering, ASIC implementation) to contribute to chip design, verification, and integration.
Internships are available at multiple offices (Irvine, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Redmond/Seattle, WA); specific assignment depends on team needs. SpaceX is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship for students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs. Candidates typically have at least 3 months of relevant software development, hardware engineering, or chip design experience.
Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities include:
- Implement and verify RTL (Verilog, VHDL) and participate in synthesis and static timing analysis flows.
- Support ASIC implementation tasks: timing closure, synthesis, simulation, and sign-off activities.
- Collaborate with firmware, architecture, validation, and product teams to integrate silicon into systems.
- Develop testbenches, scripts, and automation using Python/Perl/C++ as needed.
- Participate in design reviews, debug lab bring-up, and characterization testing.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and logistical requirements:
- Minimum 3+ months of software development, hardware engineering, or chip design/development experience.
- ITAR eligibility: U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.
- Able to work full-time onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in May or June 2027.
- Able to provide own transportation for positions at Brownsville, Cape Canaveral, and McGregor locations.
- Preferred technical skills: Verilog, VHDL, Python, C/C++, STA, synthesis, timing analysis, Spice; familiarity with formal verification and VLSI/circuit design workflows.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and initiative in dynamic environments.
Education Requirements
Must be enrolled in a bachelor's or graduate degree program. Degrees noted or implied include Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical fields.
