Hardware Engineer (FPGA/ASIC)

Role Summary

Design and implement FPGA and ASIC applications and improve the RTL design, testing, and validation toolchain. Work on hardware projects using a software-oriented workflow that emphasizes high-level hardware construction and reliable test/integration practices.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include developing hardware designs and the tools that support design and verification.

  • Design and implement new FPGA and ASIC applications from specification through integration.
  • Develop and extend high-level RTL construction and testing tools (Hardcaml/OCaml based workflows).
  • Write and review RTL (Verilog, VHDL) and integration code; work with C where required.
  • Integrate and validate designs using vendor toolflows (synthesis, place-and-route, timing closure).
  • Improve automation, verification infrastructure, and testing processes for hardware projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver and deploy hardware systems.

Requirements

Must-have skills and experience:

  • Experience with a hardware description or construction language (VHDL, Verilog, Chisel, Pymtl, or similar) for both design and testing.
  • Experience with FPGA or ASIC vendor tools (e.g., Vivado, Quartus, Genus, Innovus).
  • Proven experience building a working hardware project (academic, professional, or personal).
  • Comfortable programmer with experience in at least one software language.
  • Collaborative, intellectually curious, and able to debug and iterate on hardware/software systems.

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with OCaml and Hardcaml or other typed functional languages.
  • Experience applying FPGAs or ASICs to networking problems.
  • Experience with C and system integration tasks.
