Spring 2027 Silicon Engineering Internship/Co-op
Role Summary
Internship position within SpaceX silicon hardware engineering teams working on custom in-house ASICs and hardware deployed on-orbit. Interns work with mentors and cross-disciplinary teams (systems, firmware, architecture, design, validation, product engineering, ASIC implementation) to contribute to chip design, verification, and implementation.
Positions are onsite at multiple SpaceX sites including Abbeville, AL and other engineering locations such as Irvine, CA; Palo Alto, CA; and Redmond (Seattle), WA.
Experience Level
Entry-level internship / co-op for current students. Candidates typically have at least 3 months of relevant software development, hardware engineering, or chip design experience.
Responsibilities
Work under mentor supervision to deliver silicon-engineering tasks and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Implement and verify RTL and other ASIC design work (e.g., Verilog, VHDL).
- Support synthesis, timing analysis, and static timing analysis (STA) flows.
- Participate in design reviews, validation, and integration with system/firmware teams.
- Develop scripts and tools for automation (Python, Perl, or similar).
- Perform hands-on debugging, testbench development, and verification tasks.
- Attend optional professional and social intern program events.
- Work full time onsite for a minimum 12 consecutive weeks during the program window.
Requirements
Must-have qualifications and logistical requirements for the role.
- At least 3 months of practical experience in software development, hardware engineering, or chip design/development.
- U.S. eligibility required for ITAR: U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158.
- Available to work full time onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in January or March 2027.
- For certain sites (Brownsville, Cape Canaveral, McGregor) candidates must be able to provide their own transportation.
Nice-to-have / preferred:
- Internship or project experience (6+ months) in computer architecture, VLSI, logic design, or circuit design.
- Familiarity with verification methods and formal techniques.
- Experience with C/C++, Verilog, VHDL, Python, Perl, or Spice; exposure to synthesis and timing tools.
- Experience with simulation, timing, synthesis tools, and engineering tools such as Ansys or COMSOL.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and initiative in dynamic environments.
Education Requirements
Must be enrolled in a bachelor's or graduate degree program. The posting references academic levels for pay and program placement, including completed Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels.
