Job Title

Summer 2027 Long Term Hardware Design Engineering Intern/Co-Op

Role Summary

Internship on AMD's hardware design team focused on high-end machine intelligence ASICs. The intern will work on RTL, physical implementation, and verification tasks that contribute to chip design and delivery.

This is a full-time co-op/intern term placed in Vancouver where you will work alongside design engineers and verification teams on real product development tasks.

Experience Level

Entry-level intern/co-op position for students. Designed for currently enrolled university students; typical internship/co-op experience level.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities during the internship include hands-on design and verification tasks across RTL, synthesis, and physical design.

  • Collaborate with design engineers on physical design verification and implementation for ASICs.
  • Perform memory-interface simulation (e.g., GDDR7, HBM, UCIE).
  • Work on discrete and embedded hardware products and chip-to-chip interconnect.
  • Contribute to RTL design in Verilog and related verification activities.
  • Synthesis with timing-driven placement and design-for-power practices.
  • Floorplanning, power/clock distribution, block/chip place & route, EM/IR analysis, timing closure, and static timing analysis.
  • Support logical equivalence checking, RTL clocking analysis, static power analysis, and design-for-test (DFT).
  • Build test libraries and models using SystemVerilog, UVM, and C++ as required.

Requirements

Must be available full-time for the specified co-op/intern term and able to work onsite or hybrid in Vancouver.

  • Available full-time (37.5 hours/week) for either the 12-month term (May 3, 2027–Apr 21, 2028) or the 16-month term (May 3, 2027–Aug 18, 2028).
  • Able to work onsite or in a hybrid arrangement in Vancouver, BC for the duration of the term.

Preferred / nice-to-have:

  • Experience or coursework in digital/logic circuits, VLSI, or semiconductor device physics.
  • Familiarity with Verilog or VHDL; RTL design and synthesis flow experience.
  • Exposure to SystemVerilog, UVM methodologies, and verification languages.
  • Scripting experience (Python, TCL, Perl, Ruby), Shell/UNIX, C/C++, or MATLAB.
  • Knowledge of physical design (PD) process, chip-level integration, DFT, and timing closure techniques.
  • Experience in Linux/Unix environments and interest or exposure to machine learning.
  • Any prior ASIC design, memory-interface, or place-and-route experience is a plus.

Education Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Canadian university Bachelor's degree program in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
