Summer 2027 Long-Term Hardware Design Engineering Intern / Co-op
Advanced Micro DevicesJob Title
Summer 2027 Long-Term Hardware Design Engineering Intern / Co-op
Role Summary
Work on hardware design and delivery for AMD's high-end machine intelligence products. The intern will contribute to RTL development, physical design verification, memory-interface simulation, and chip-level integration tasks within a hardware design team.
This role is full-time (37.5 hrs/week) and requires an onsite or hybrid presence at the Markham, Ontario site for the duration of the co-op/intern term.
Experience Level
Entry-level β student intern/co-op. Targeted at current university students (undergraduate or graduate) participating in a co-op or internship program.
Responsibilities
Typical assignments include a mix of RTL, verification, and physical design tasks:
- Collaborate with design engineers on physical design verification and implementation for ASICs.
- Perform memory-interface simulation (e.g., GDDR7, HBM, UCIE).
- Develop and modify RTL (Verilog); participate in synthesis with timing-driven placement and design-for-power.
- Assist with floorplanning, power and clock distribution, block/chip place & route, EM/IR analysis, timing closure, and static timing analysis.
- Support logical equivalence checks, RTL clocking analysis, static power analysis, and design-for-test (DFT) activities.
- Build verification/test models and libraries using SystemVerilog, UVM, and C++ as required.
Requirements
Core technical skills and environment expectations. Education requirements are listed below under "Education Requirements."
- Hands-on experience with Verilog or VHDL and basic digital/logic design concepts (VLSI fundamentals).
- Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments and scripting (Python, TCL, Perl, shell); C/C++ or MATLAB experience is useful.
- Understanding of ASIC design flow, physical design (PD) processes, and synthesis concepts.
- Exposure to memory interfaces, chip-to-chip interconnects, or embedded hardware is beneficial.
- Preferred: experience with UVM/SystemVerilog verification methodologies, DFT, and familiarity with timing closure and static timing analysis.
- Interest in machine learning or semiconductor device physics is a plus.
Education Requirements
Currently enrolled as a university student. The posting specifically requests students enrolled in a Canada-based bachelor's degree program majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field. The listing also indicates AMD internships are open to undergraduate and PhD students in general.
