Staff Test Engineer

Role Summary

Responsible for ensuring testability and manufacturability of optical components (e.g., CW lasers, edge-emitting lasers, ELS) from device feasibility through production ramp. Works with R&D, Test Engineering, Operations and suppliers to develop, validate and release automated test systems, test strategies, and tools for high-volume production.

Experience Level

Senior - typically requires 7+ years of experience in test engineering, automation, or software development in hardware environments.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include developing production test systems, driving yield and automation improvements, and leading troubleshooting and failure analysis.

• Define and develop automated test systems for high-volume production in collaboration with R&D, TE, Operations, and external suppliers.
• Develop, implement, and release test strategies, processes, and tools that meet required speed, scale, cost and quality targets.
• Perform statistical data analysis and root-cause troubleshooting to drive yield improvement.
• Identify and lead initiatives for test automation, test-time and cost reduction, and process improvement.
• Lead troubleshooting and failure analysis (FA) activities with suppliers and operations to maximize tester uptime and utilization.
• Develop and debug complex software programs and EDA tools for process and test equipment.
• Coordinate cross-functional actions to deliver solutions and improvements.
• Some travel is required.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills, experience, and behaviors.

• 7+ years experience in test engineering, automation, or software development in a hardware environment.
• Strong programming fundamentals; experience developing automation and analytics applications.
• Hands-on experience with instruments, motion systems, fiber, cabling, and signal troubleshooting.
• Practical experience with statistical analysis and tools for yield/root-cause analysis.
• Knowledge of Gage R&R, correlation, test coverage and qualification methods.
• Demonstrated problem-solving, data-driven analytical mindset, and ability to own and drive initiatives to closure.
• Strong communication skills and experience facilitating cross-functional meetings and resolving conflicts.

Nice-to-have:

• Experience with semiconductor lasers (edge-emitting lasers, VCSELs), photonics packaging, laser diodes, LEDs, photodetectors, driver ICs, and optical components.

Education Requirements

BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Information (or related technical major).
