Staff SSD Hardware PCIe Engineer
Role Summary
Join Micron’s SSD Hardware Architecture organization to design, validate, and bring up PCIe subsystems for high-performance SSD controller SoCs. You will lead PCIe bring-up, system-level validation, and cross-functional debugging to ensure product performance and reliability.
Experience Level
Senior — requires 7+ years of industry experience in hardware development, silicon validation, or PCIe subsystem engineering.
Responsibilities
Primary duties include PCIe design validation, integration, and cross-team collaboration.
- Develop detailed hardware and system specifications from architectural and product requirements.
- Lead PCIe bring-up, characterization, debugging, and validation for SSD controller SoCs.
- Evaluate, integrate, and support commercial PCIe IP solutions and work with third-party IP vendors to resolve issues.
- Create system-level validation environments and automated test suites for PCIe protocol validation and compliance testing.
- Build validation methodologies and comprehensive validation plans; apply system-level validation tools and techniques.
- Analyze failures, perform root-cause investigations, and drive issue resolution across teams.
- Collaborate with Architecture, Build, Verification, Firmware, and Product Engineering; coordinate with pre-silicon validation to improve post-silicon tests and debug capabilities.
- Validate PCIe IP in complex system-level use cases for high-performance SSD applications.
- Improve infrastructure, methodology, and automation to increase validation efficiency and coverage; leverage AI-assisted tools where applicable.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, tools, and experience required for the role.
- 7+ years industry experience in hardware development, silicon validation, or PCIe subsystem engineering.
- Strong expertise with PCIe Gen4/Gen5/Gen6, PCIe host systems and root complexes, PCIe IP bring-up, and protocol compliance/interoperability.
- Comprehensive knowledge of PCIe LTSSM (Link Training and Status State Machine).
- Experience with post-silicon validation approaches and debugging techniques.
- Proficiency in Python, TCL, C, or similar scripting/programming languages.
- Experience using high-speed test and measurement equipment (ATE systems, real-time and sampling oscilloscopes, signal/pulse generators, laboratory power instrumentation).
- Experience partnering with external silicon and IP vendors to troubleshoot and improve functionality.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience implementing or validating PCIe subsystems in ASIC and/or FPGA builds.
- Experience with SSD controller architectures, SoC architecture, or storage systems.
- Knowledge of PCIe link equalization algorithms, DFE, receiver architecture, high-speed PCB build, signal integrity, power delivery networks, EMI/ESD protection.
- Experience applying AI-assisted engineering tools to improve productivity and debug efficiency.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field is preferred.
