Job Title
Staff SSD Firmware Test Engineer
Role Summary
Lead validation strategy and test infrastructure for enterprise SSD firmware, focusing on NVMe front-end features across multiple product lines. Own architecture and implementation of scalable test frameworks, introduce AI/ML-driven validation methods, drive end-to-end verification across simulation, FPGA, and prototype hardware, and mentor engineering teams while influencing firmware architecture and tooling decisions.
Experience Level
Senior. Basic qualifications indicate Bachelor's with ~8+ years, Master's with ~6+ years, or PhD with ~4+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include defining and owning verification strategy, test frameworks, and validation deliverables.
- Lead design and execution of firmware verification for customer specs and NVMe protocols; validate complex front-end features (e.g., SMART, Trim, Get Log Page, OCP).
- Architect scalable grey-box, white-box, and black-box test frameworks to standardize firmware quality practices.
- Own test infrastructure roadmap including automation frameworks, CI/CD integration, and reporting dashboards.
- Design and deploy AI/ML solutions for test optimization, failure triage, predictive analytics, and anomaly detection.
- Perform root-cause analysis for critical field and regression failures and establish systematic debug practices.
- Define test coverage standards, lead code reviews, and drive continuous improvement in code quality and test effectiveness.
- Present technical findings, risk assessments, and recommendations to senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and foster engineering excellence.
- Collaborate with firmware architects, product managers, and customers to define testability requirements and influence firmware design.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience followed by concise nice-to-have items.
-
Must-have: Expert-level Python experience (including NumPy, pandas, scikit-learn) and a track record building production-quality automation frameworks.
-
Must-have: Deep expertise in test architecture, automation strategy, and validation methodologies for complex firmware.
-
Must-have: Demonstrated experience applying ML models to real-world testing problems (designing, training, deploying models for test optimization or failure analysis).
-
Must-have: Proven ability to lead technical initiatives, influence cross-functional teams, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
-
Nice-to-have: Experience with TensorFlow or PyTorch and MLOps practices.
-
Nice-to-have: Practical experience implementing AI/Generative AI tools to improve test automation, data analysis, and engineering productivity.
-
Nice-to-have: Familiarity with embedded systems, firmware architecture, hardware-software interfaces, and storage industry standards (NVMe, PCIe, OCP).
-
Nice-to-have: Knowledge of NAND flash memory and SSD firmware validation methodologies.
-
Nice-to-have: Proficiency reading firmware code in Rust or C; Linux/Windows administration and Git/CI/CD pipeline experience.
-
Nice-to-have: Contributions to open-source projects, patents, publications, or experience leading small teams or cross-functional initiatives.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree with ~8+ years, Master's degree with ~6+ years, or PhD with ~4+ years in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related technical field are stated as the baseline qualifications.
