Job Title
Staff Software Engineer
Role Summary
This role owns hardware/software bring-up and proof-of-concept integrations for Renesas AMS sensor and mixed-signal ICs on customer-selected compute platforms to enable design wins in robotics, AI infrastructure, and automotive.
Experience Level
Senior (Staff level). Qualifications indicate Staff: 10+ years of embedded firmware/software development; Senior: 7+ years.
Responsibilities
Work as the technical lead for customer integrations, delivering working firmware, demos, and documentation.
- Own hardware/software bring-up of AMS and sensor ICs on customer platforms without assuming Renesas reference designs.
- Write driver-level firmware in C/C++ (I2C, SPI, UART, GPIO, interrupts, register-level configuration) from datasheets and schematics.
- Build application-layer demonstration code to prove end-use cases (e.g., inductive position sensing, impedance sensing, force/torque sensing).
- Lead technical integration for flagship joint development programs and meet external deadlines (trade shows, customer commitments).
- Debug signal-chain issues spanning analog front end, digital bus, and host software stack in customer labs.
- Partner with FAEs, product marketing, business development, and customer engineers to scope PoCs and define success criteria.
- Develop reusable driver frameworks and reference architectures for reuse across engagements.
- Produce clear technical documentation: architectures, register maps, and bring-up guides.
- Provide technical mentorship and act as an escalation point at the Staff level.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills, experience, and constraints.
- 10+ years embedded firmware/software development across multiple silicon vendors and MCU/SoC ecosystems (Staff level). Senior roles accepted at ~7+ years.
- Proven, strong C/C++ skills at both driver and application level.
- Direct experience bringing up analog/mixed-signal ICs and sensors on third-party platforms using only datasheets and schematics.
- Deep protocol-level experience with I2C, SPI, UART, and Ethernet-based interfaces.
- Experience in both bare-metal and RTOS development environments.
- Ability to operate under ambiguous conditions with incomplete documentation and shifting requirements.
- Strong verbal and written communication for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to travel up to 20% for customer lab visits and trade shows.
Nice-to-have:
- Robotics or industrial sensing experience (position, force/torque, proximity/impedance sensing).
- Experience with edge AI compute platforms and their SDK/driver ecosystems.
- Exposure to configurable mixed-signal/state-machine-based analog design.
- Prior customer-facing technical roles (FAE, solutions architect, applications engineering).
- Python for test automation, data logging, or tooling; experience mentoring engineers; experience in matrixed organizations.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience. Preferred: Master's degree in a related engineering field. (Equivalent practical experience is explicitly accepted.)
