Job Title
Staff Semiconductor Power Engineer (ICB4)
Role Summary
Lead power strategy and execution for complex System-on-Chip (SoC) projects. Own end-to-end power definition, analysis, and optimization across architecture, RTL, physical design, and software integration.
Work cross-functionally to meet strict power and thermal targets through pre-silicon analysis, methodology development, and silicon validation.
Experience Level
Senior-level (Staff). Role expects extensive industry experience consistent with a staff engineering position; see Education Requirements for specific years-of-experience guidance.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include leading power planning, analysis, and optimization through all design phases and ensuring alignment with system-level constraints.
- Own the full power lifecycle for complex SoCs: architectural power definition, budgeting, and silicon validation.
- Perform dynamic and leakage power analysis at RTL, gate-level, and post-layout using industry EDA tools.
- Develop and maintain power analysis flows, automation scripts, and methodologies to improve accuracy and turnaround.
- Identify power bottlenecks and implement reduction strategies (clock gating, power gating, DVFS, etc.) across micro-architecture, logic, and physical implementation.
- Collaborate with physical design on PDN sign-off and IR/EM analysis and with systems/board teams on thermal and packaging constraints.
- Correlate pre-silicon estimates with silicon validation and work with lab teams to validate power behavior.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience for this role.
Must-have:
- Proven experience in power definition, estimation, and optimization for complex SoCs or high-performance IP.
- Hands-on experience with power analysis and sign-off tools (examples: Synopsys Pt-PX / PrimePower, Ansys RedHawk, Cadence Joules, PowerArtist).
- Deep knowledge of low-power design intents and formats (UPF/CPF), CMOS device behavior, and common power reduction techniques.
- Strong scripting and automation skills (Python, Tcl, Perl) and ability to leverage AI-assisted coding tools to accelerate methodology development and debugging.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills to present power trade-offs to cross-functional teams and leadership.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with advanced process nodes (7nm, 5nm, 3nm or below).
- Familiarity with thermal modeling, PDN design, and IR/EM mitigation.
- Experience correlating pre-silicon power estimates with post-silicon laboratory measurements.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree with ~8+ years of relevant industry experience, or Master's degree with ~6+ years of relevant industry experience, in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
