Job Title
Staff Research Scientist, AI-Hardware Co-Design
Role Summary
Architect and validate co-designed AI algorithms and hardware architectures for edge and embedded systems. Member of the Algorithmic Solutions Group in The Analog Garage (Boston), responsible for defining compute strategies and delivering validated proofs-of-concept that bridge research algorithms and hardware implementation.
Experience Level
Senior level. The role expects industry experience applying architectural principles (posting indicates at least 3+ years) and leadership on system-level engineering problems.
Responsibilities
Drive system-level algorithm/architecture co-design and lead technical execution from research to validated prototype.
- Identify high-impact system problems and define strategic technical directions with business and domain leads.
- Architect end-to-end compute strategies that jointly optimize algorithms and hardware for power, area, and performance.
- Perform feasibility analysis using simulation and modeling to quantify memory hierarchy, dataflow, precision, and performance trade-offs.
- Lead research-to-product activities: design architectures, coordinate proofs-of-concept, and work with hardware teams to validate solutions.
- Mentor engineers, maintain awareness of AI hardware/algorithm trends, and bring state-of-the-art methods into product directions.
Requirements
Key technical skills and professional capabilities expected for successful performance.
- Deep system-level hardware expertise: experience organizing computation and data, optimizing memory hierarchies, on-chip networks, and execution models.
- Proven ability with hardware-aware deep learning: model optimization, quantization (INT8, mixed-precision), tiling, dataflow mapping; proficiency with modern ML frameworks (PyTorch, JAX).
- Experience using high-fidelity simulation or cycle-accurate modeling to validate architectural hypotheses and quantify trade-offs.
- Track record of leading research projects through implementation-focused prototypes in collaboration with hardware teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel (~10%).
-
Nice-to-have: tape-out experience on complex SoCs or custom AI accelerators, DSP and signal-processing fluency, hands-on RTL/HDL familiarity (Verilog/SystemVerilog, Chisel, PyMTL), and a strong publication record.
Education Requirements
PhD in Computer Architecture or Integrated Circuit Design (specialized for AI workloads) is specified.
