Staff Mechanical Engineer
LumentumJob Title
Staff Mechanical Engineer
Role Summary
Lead mechanical design and development for next-generation 1.6T and 2.4T optical transceiver modules for high-speed data center and AI applications. Provide technical leadership across concept, detailed design, prototyping, qualification, mass production, and customer support.
Experience Level
Senior level - typically 6+ years of relevant mechanical design and product development experience in optical transceivers or precision electronic products.
Responsibilities
Accountable for mechanical architecture, design quality, manufacturability, and cross-functional delivery for high-density, high-power optical modules.
- Lead mechanical architecture and detailed design for 1.6T and 2.4T transceiver modules and high-density form factors (e.g., OSFP).
- Develop mechanical solutions to meet optical, electrical, thermal, and high-speed signal integrity requirements.
- Design and optimize housings, cages, heat sinks, optical receptacles, pull-tabs, internal brackets, shields, gaskets, and sealing structures.
- Perform thermal design and analysis for high-power DSP, PIC, TIA, lasers, and other components.
- Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure fit, alignment, assembly, and optical coupling performance.
- Specify and validate EMI shielding, ESD protection, environmental sealing, contamination controls, and shock/vibration resistance.
- Drive DFM/DFA activities and collaborate with manufacturing, process engineering, quality, reliability, and suppliers to ensure manufacturability and schedule.
- Define and execute mechanical verification and qualification plans (dimensional inspection, thermal cycling, humidity, shock/vibration, insertion/withdrawal, pull-tab durability, etc.).
- Lead failure analysis, root-cause identification, and corrective/preventive actions.
- Review and approve 2D drawings, 3D models, specifications, tolerances, and engineering changes; mentor mechanical engineers and lead technical reviews.
Requirements
Required skills and experience for immediate contribution.
Must-have:
- 6+ years designing mechanical components for optical transceivers, high-speed communication modules, optoelectronic packages, or precision electronic products.
- Proven experience with high-density, high-power module development (preferably 800G, 1.6T, or 2.4T).
- Strong knowledge of mechanical design, material selection, tolerance analysis, GD&T, thermal management, and reliability engineering.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD (Creo, SolidWorks, NX, or equivalent) and 2D drawing/documentation practices.
- Experience with manufacturing processes: plastic injection molding, die casting, CNC machining, stamping, sheet metal, adhesives, gaskets, and supplier/tooling management.
- Experience leading projects from concept through mass production and collaborating cross-functionally.
- Strong problem-solving, presentation, and cross-functional communication skills; effective written and spoken English.
Preferred / Nice-to-have:
- Experience with OSFP, QSFP-DD, or other pluggable optical transceiver form factors.
- Experience with optical alignment, fiber-optic connector structures, TOSA/ROSA packaging, and optoelectronic assembly.
- Familiarity with EMI/EMC shielding, ESD control, environmental sealing, and contamination control strategies.
- Experience with thermal simulation tools (FloTHERM, Icepak, ANSYS, or equivalent).
- Experience with reliability testing, failure analysis, and statistical/tolerance analysis.
- Experience working with global customers and international suppliers; prior technical leadership and mentoring experience.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related engineering field.
