Staff Functional Safety (FuSa) Engineer
Role Summary
Work on next-generation automotive and industrial IP products from Arm's Austin office, coordinating and driving functional safety activities within a project. Act as the project's safety liaison to product management, quality management, and external safety assessors.
This role leads development of safety work products, safety analyses, and continuous improvement of functional safety practices.
Experience Level
Senior - the role expects established engineering experience. The posting specifies 7+ years of VLSI hardware design experience with a BS or 5+ years with an MS; equivalent practical experience is also acceptable.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include defining and delivering the project's functional safety deliverables and leading safety activities across the team.
- Develop and maintain functional safety work products such as Safety Plan and Safety Case report following established methodologies.
- Lead safety analysis activities and produce artifacts such as FMEA, FMEDA, and DFA.
- Define functional safety requirements with product management.
- Plan and estimate safety activities, and support safety-related training.
- Support safety assessments and act as liaison to safety assessors and quality teams.
- Drive continual improvement initiatives to make functional safety practices more effective and efficient.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience required to perform the role.
- Proficiency in hardware design and development and familiarity with HDL (Verilog, VHDL).
- Proficiency in programming/scripting languages such as C, C++, Perl, or Python.
- Understanding of hardware failure modes and safety mechanisms.
- Practical experience with safety analysis methodologies (FMEA, FMEDA, DFA).
- Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience applying industry standards for functional safety (for example ISO 26262, IEC 61508).
- Exposure to safety-critical automotive or industrial projects (ADAS, AD, IVI, digital cockpit, robotics).
- Experience authoring and reviewing technical safety documentation.
- Experience with fault simulation and fault analysis.
Education Requirements
BS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 7+ years of VLSI hardware design experience, or MS in Electrical or Computer Engineering with 5+ years of VLSI hardware design experience. The posting also accepts equivalent practical experience.
