Staff Functional Safety Engineer
Role Summary
Join the Automotive and Industrial Architectures team to define and lead safety concepts and model-based safety analyses for hardware, software and system architectures that integrate AI components.
The role covers end-to-end safety activities across HW, SW and system levels, addressing safety, cybersecurity, reliability, availability and real-time constraints to support certification-ready designs.

Responsibilities
Lead and execute safety engineering activities and investigations across system, HW and SW levels.
- Develop and drive Technical Safety Concepts and perform Model-Based Safety Analysis (MBSA) for automotive and industrial systems that include AI components.
- Perform inductive and deductive, qualitative and quantitative safety analyses using industry-standard tools.
- Investigate emerging technologies (AI, reliability, cybersecurity, predictive maintenance) for their safety and dependability impact.
- Standardize and improve safety methodologies, evaluate new tools, and propose process improvements to enable efficient safety adoption.
- Produce, author and review high-quality safety documentation and reports aligned with industry standards.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience.
- Design and verification of embedded electronic systems, including hardware and software architecture experience.
- Proficiency with HDL (Verilog, VHDL) and programming in Assembler, C, C++ and Python.
- Practical experience on functional-safety development projects and safety certification of IPs, HW, SW or SoCs.
- Familiarity and hands-on use of safety analysis methodologies and tools: FTA, FMEDA, DFA, SW FMEA, STPA, SPFM/LFM and PMHF.
- Proven ability to author and review high-level technical and safety documentation.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to convey complex technical information effectively.
Nice-to-have:
- Experience developing ML/AI applications and toolchains (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
- Familiarity with cybersecurity approaches: TARA, attack trees, HSM architectures.
- Exposure to reliability technologies and testing methodologies applied to SoCs (RAS, predictive maintenance, BFR, HTOL, HAST, burn-in, JEDEC specs).
- Experience with safety-critical automotive/industrial domains (AD, ADAS, IVI, digital cockpit) and SoC/chiplet design.
- Experience with HW/SW architecture modelling and MBSE frameworks (ISO 15288, MagicGrid, SysML 2.0).
- Relevant functional safety and cybersecurity professional certifications are advantageous.
Education Requirements
Preferably a degree in Electronics, Computer Science or a related technical field; a PhD is a plus. Relevant industry experience may be accepted in lieu of a formal degree. Professional functional safety or cybersecurity certifications are beneficial.
