Staff Functional Safety Engineer
Role Summary
Senior functional safety engineer responsible for coordinating and delivering functional safety activities for next-generation Automotive and Industrial IP products. The role sits on a verification/safety team based in Austin and acts as the project liaison to product management, quality, and safety assessors.
Primary duties include defining the safety context, producing safety work products, driving safety analyses, and improving safety practices across the project.
Experience Level
Senior - typically 7+ years' relevant experience (7+ years with a BS, or 5+ years with an MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering as noted under education).
Responsibilities
Deliver and lead functional safety activities for hardware IP projects.
- Develop and maintain safety work products (Safety Plan, Safety Case report) following established methodologies.
- Plan and drive safety analyses and produce associated outputs (FMEA, FMEDA, DFA).
- Establish functional safety requirements with product management.
- Support project planning for safety activities, resource estimation, and safety training.
- Support and coordinate functional safety assessments with safety leads and assessors.
- Implement continual improvement initiatives for functional safety processes and practices.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and relevant experience.
- Must-have: Proficiency in hardware design and HDLs (Verilog, VHDL) and programming (C, C++, Perl, Python).
- Knowledge of hardware failure modes and safety mechanisms.
- Practical experience applying safety analysis methodologies such as FMEA, FMEDA, and DFA.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience coordinating cross-functional teams.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with ISO 26262 or IEC 61508, automotive/industrial safety projects (AD, ADAS, IVI, digital cockpit, robotics), fault simulation/analysis, and authoring technical safety documentation.
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering plus 7+ years' experience in VLSI hardware design, or a Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering plus 5+ years' experience in VLSI hardware design. Equivalent practical experience may be accepted where indicated.
