Staff Engineer, SSD Firmware Test

Role Summary

Senior engineering role responsible for developing and validating SSD firmware and test infrastructure. Works within a cross-functional storage engineering team to define test strategies, diagnose firmware issues, and improve product quality and test automation.

Responsibilities

Accountable for firmware test design, execution, and improvement across SSD products; mentors junior engineers and collaborates with hardware, firmware, and system teams.

  • Design, implement, and maintain firmware test frameworks and automated test suites for SSDs.
  • Create and run test cases for functionality, reliability, performance, and regression.
  • Analyze failures, perform root-cause analysis, and drive fixes with firmware and hardware teams.
  • Develop scripts and tools to automate test setup, data collection, and reporting.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers; provide technical guidance and review.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define requirements and ensure test coverage.
  • Continuously improve test coverage, cycle time, and test efficiency, including identifying automation opportunities.

Requirements

Key technical skills and experience required or preferred for the role.

Must-have:

  • Extensive embedded firmware development experience.
  • Strong programming and scripting skills, including extensive Python experience.
  • Experience in the storage industry (SSD, HDD, storage systems) and with NAND or other non-volatile storage.
  • Familiarity with storage interfaces such as PCIe/NVMe, SATA, or SAS.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to lead or supervise junior engineers.
  • Experience developing test frameworks, automated test suites, and using programming tools/environments for validation.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience leveraging AI/GenAI tools to accelerate firmware workflows (code generation, test/unit generation, debugging assistance).
  • Experience applying agentic or AI-assisted workflows for firmware debugging and RCA.
  • Familiarity with AI governance, security/IP safeguards, and human-in-the-loop validation practices.
  • Prior leadership on cross-functional firmware/validation projects and strong collaboration skills under multiple priorities.
