Job Title

Staff Engineer, Physical Design

Role Summary

Lead physical design efforts for complex digital/memory/analog integrated circuits, covering top-level planning, block-level APR, verification, and tape‑out readiness. Work within a cross‑functional engineering organization to ensure manufacturability and sign‑off across timing, DRC/LVS, and reliability metrics.

Experience Level

Senior-level engineer. Specific years of experience not specified.

Responsibilities

The role owns top-level integration and block-level physical implementation, verification, and process handoff.

  • Lead layout process: floorplanning, placement, routing, CTS, ECOs, and sign‑off.
  • Perform top-level planning: virtual flat placement, global routing, partitioning, pin optimization, and repeater/feedthrough planning.
  • Execute full APR flow (init → floorplan → place → CTS → route → ECO → sign‑off) and close STA across corners.
  • Perform parasitic modeling and correlate simulations (DRC/LVS/EM/IR) to drive design revisions and tape‑out readiness.
  • Generate and hand off block‑level constraints (timing budgets, SDC, ILM/ETM, physical constraints) to block owners.
  • Automate flows and tooling; extend shared analysis dashboards and internal make‑based flows.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Probe, Assembly, Test, Process Integration, STA, DFT, CAD, and custom‑layout teams to ensure manufacturability.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to methodology and standards documentation.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and responsibilities expected for successful candidates; a shortlist of preferred additions is included.

  • Demonstrated ownership of physical design implementation and sign‑off (APR, timing closure, DRC/LVS, EM/IR).
  • Experience with top‑level integration tasks: partitioning, global routing, pin optimization, and repeater insertion.
  • Strong verification and correlation skills using industry simulators and parasitic modeling.
  • Proficiency in scripting/automation (Tcl, SKILL, Python) to automate flows and build tools.
  • Proven ability to work cross‑functionally and drive ECOs to convergence.
  • Mentorship and methodology‑development experience; ability to document and teach processes.
  • Nice-to-have: experience with memory/analog blocks, tape‑out/reticle experiments, and leveraging AI to improve flows.

Education Requirements

Not specified.
