Job Title
Staff Engineer, Modeling and ESD
Role Summary
Join the Compound Semiconductor Device Modeling team to deliver compact device models, EM/electrothermal simulation support, and ESD protection infrastructure for Qorvo's internal GaAs technologies and selected foundry processes. The role combines hands-on device characterization, model extraction, ESD circuit support, and design enablement.
The engineer will collaborate with circuit designers, process technologists, and EDA teams to validate models, maintain PDK libraries, and support product development across RF, MMIC, and related applications.
Experience Level
Entry-level / Early-career (0β2 years of industry experience recommended).
Responsibilities
Primary technical and support responsibilities include:
- Design and layout test structures for DC and RF characterization using circuit-layout tools (e.g., ADS).
- Perform on-wafer electrical measurements: DC, CV, S-parameters, noise, large-signal, and temperature-dependent tests.
- Extract, validate, and document compact device models (AHBT, HICUM, EEHEMT, Verilog-A) and validate across PVT conditions.
- Develop and maintain EM and electrothermal technology definitions for simulation environments.
- Characterize ESD devices and protection circuits (TLP, VF-TLP) and develop ESD protection cell libraries for PDKs.
- Review product designs for ESD robustness and provide implementation guidance for RF/analog/mixed-signal designs.
- Automate characterization, model extraction, validation, and data-analysis workflows.
- Support design engineers in model usage and communicate model limitations and device capabilities.
- Collaborate with device development and EDA teams to integrate models and enable design flows.
- Maintain thorough documentation of measurements, models, and simulation assumptions.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; preferred items are listed separately.
- 0β2 years industry experience in semiconductor, RF, or microelectronics engineering.
- Hands-on experience or coursework/internship exposure to Keysight ADS, Cadence AWR Microwave Office, Cadence Virtuoso, or similar tools.
- Programming/scripting for automation and data analysis (preferably Python).
- Experience with on-wafer electrical measurements and laboratory characterization techniques.
- Understanding of semiconductor device physics and fundamental RF device behavior.
- Strong written and verbal communication and ability to collaborate across teams.
- Ability to balance customer support activities with project-driven deliverables and schedules.
-
Nice-to-have: experience with compact modeling tools, EM or electrothermal simulation, statistical analysis/visualization tools, ESD design methodologies, compound semiconductor technologies, and Verilog-A model development.
Education Requirements
Required: BS in Electrical Engineering or a related field. Preferred: MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related disciplines. The posting also accepts equivalent graduate research experience in lieu of industry experience.
