Job Title
Staff Engineer, Hardware Application Engineering — Lab Operations
Role Summary
Senior individual contributor accountable for day-to-day operations and long-term capability of Marvell's Customer Solutions Group (CSG) hardware lab in Santa Clara. Own the lab infrastructure, equipment lifecycle, inventory and RMA readiness, vendor relationships, budget execution, remote-lab enablement, and demo/tradeshow logistics.
Experience Level
Senior — requires 7+ years of hands-on hardware lab and validation engineering experience as stated in the posting.
Responsibilities
Primary operational and technical duties to keep the Santa Clara CSG lab ready for engineering work and customer engagements.
- Own lab infrastructure and daily operations: equipment, setups, organization, safety, and operational health across all supported platforms.
- Manage test setup lifecycle: assembly, calibration schedules, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, documentation, and decommissioning.
- Maintain equipment inventory, asset tracking, spares, cables, fixtures, consumables, and utilization records.
- Keep RMA test setups ready to receive and process returned units, including test coverage and re-test procedures.
- Source and manage relationships with test-equipment vendors, integrators, and service providers; evaluate quotes and recommend purchases.
- Execute against the annual lab equipment and operating budget; manage purchase orders and report spend vs plan.
- Enable reliable remote access to lab setups and maintain setup state, connectivity monitoring, and recovery procedures for global users.
- Plan and manage logistics for customer demos and industry tradeshows: equipment selection, shipping, on-site setup, teardown, and return.
- Coordinate cross-functionally with hardware design, silicon, software, facilities, and security teams on lab needs and build-outs.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience required to perform the role; preferred items listed separately.
- 7+ years of hands-on hardware lab and validation engineering experience, including running or owning a lab and test setups.
- Hands-on familiarity operating and troubleshooting test & measurement equipment (oscilloscopes, BERTs, VNAs, TDR, jitter analyzers, logic analyzers, power supplies, electronic loads, compliance kits).
- Practical understanding of high-speed networking and SerDes test concepts (eye diagrams, BER, jitter, return loss, PDN behavior, thermal validation) sufficient to set up and maintain test environments and troubleshoot issues.
- Proven vendor management experience: sourcing, quoting, negotiating, and managing service and RMA cycles.
- Experience executing operational budgets and reporting financial status against plan.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain a complex, multi-platform lab under continuous project pressure.
- Experience supporting customer demos, tradeshows, or executive engagements and owning logistics end-to-end.
- Experience coordinating with facilities and security teams on lab infrastructure, access controls, and build-outs.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills for working across engineers, vendors, and global sites.
Preferred:
- Experience with Ethernet switching, AI fabric, or high-speed networking platform lab support.
- Familiarity with remote lab access technologies (KVM-over-IP, equipment automation frameworks, lab reservation systems).
- Experience coordinating global engineering labs across multiple time zones and maintaining RMA/failure-analysis setups.
- Experience with lab renovation, expansion, or new-site build-out projects and familiarity with lab safety standards and ESD controls.
- Experience supporting major industry tradeshows (OFC, SC, Hot Chips, OCP, or similar).
Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (as stated in the posting).
