Job Title
Staff Engineer, Failure Analysis Engineering
Role Summary
Lead failure analysis for returned and new-product semiconductor issues to identify root cause, recommend corrective actions, and support yield improvement. Work closely with design, application, process, product and packaging teams and mentor junior engineers.
Experience Level
Senior level. Typical experience guidance in the posting: BS + 7 years or MS + 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include technical investigation, cross-functional coordination, documentation, and equipment ownership.
- Perform root-cause analysis of RMA returns and new product failures.
- Investigate and determine causes of yield excursions.
- Collaborate with Design, Application, Process, Product and Package engineering to identify failure causes and propose corrective actions.
- Prepare clear technical reports describing failure analysis findings and recommendations.
- Meet failure analysis cycle-time and quality commitments.
- Develop and implement new failure-analysis techniques.
- Own and maintain assigned failure-analysis equipment to ensure readiness.
- Mentor and train junior engineers in analysis techniques and best practices.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience; nice-to-have items are noted.
-
Must-have: Experience in Failure Analysis, Product, Design, Application, Fab Process or Test Engineering.
-
Must-have: Strong understanding of analog and mixed-signal circuit analysis and diode/transistor device physics.
-
Must-have: Ability to read schematics and layout.
-
Must-have: Familiarity with failure-analysis tools and techniques such as optical microscopy, X-ray, EMMI, OBIRCH, ELITE and microprobing.
-
Must-have: Hands-on experience with electrical bench equipment (curve tracer, source meters, oscilloscopes, voltage/current sources, function generators).
-
Must-have: Practical knowledge of FIB operation, parallel lapping, chemical deprocessing and other physical failure-analysis activities.
-
Must-have: Strong troubleshooting skills and good oral/written English communication.
-
Nice-to-have: Fab and/or assembly process experience.
-
Nice-to-have: Chemistry lab experience.
Education Requirements
Engineering, Physics, or Science degree with semiconductor emphasis. Posting specifies either a BS with 7+ years of experience or an MS with 5+ years of experience.
