Job Title

Staff Engineer, ESSD Firmware Developer

Role Summary

Develop high-performance controller firmware for volatile and non-volatile memory systems and SSDs. Work on evaluation, implementation, bench testing, debugging, and failure analysis to improve performance, reduce power and latency, and simplify SoC integration.

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, triage failures, file bug reports, and support isolation and resolution of hardware/software issues.

Experience Level

Senior level. Recommended 6–12 years of experience in embedded firmware and storage/SSD development.

Responsibilities

Core responsibilities include firmware design, validation, and debugging across controller and SSD subsystems.

  • Design, implement, and debug firmware using C and assembly for memory controllers and SSDs.
  • Develop and execute bench tests, reproduce failures, perform root-cause analysis, and file bug reports.
  • Work with storage protocols (PCIe/NVMe); optionally SATA or SAS where applicable.
  • Use ARM development tools and IDEs (for example Eclipse) and associated toolchains for firmware build and debug.
  • Create scripts and tooling to automate tests and debugging workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, system, test) to isolate issues and drive fixes.
  • Lead or mentor junior engineers and technicians; contribute to team planning and prioritization.
  • Operate standard test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic/bus analyzers) during validation and debug.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience; optional items listed as preferred.

  • Must-have: Strong firmware design and debug experience in C and assembly.
  • Must-have: Practical experience with PCIe/NVMe protocols.
  • Must-have: Experience with ARM development toolchains and IDEs (e.g., Eclipse).
  • Must-have: Proficiency with scripting languages and programming tools to support testing and automation.
  • Must-have: Ability to work independently and collaborate in multi-functional teams; track record of mentoring or leading junior engineers.
  • Preferred: Prior experience in SSD, HDD, storage systems, NAND flash or other non-volatile memory technologies.
  • Preferred: Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other lab/test equipment.
  • Preferred: Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Education Requirements

BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent required; equivalent practical experience will be accepted.
