Staff Engineer, ESSD Firmware Developer
Micron TechnologyJob Title
Staff Engineer, ESSD Firmware Developer
Role Summary
Develop high-performance controller and SSD firmware for volatile and non-volatile memory systems. Work with cross-disciplinary engineering teams to design, build, bench-test, debug, and analyze firmware that improves performance, reduces power and latency, and reduces SoC complexity.
Experience Level
Senior-level. Preferred experience: approximately 6β15 years in SSD/storage firmware development or equivalent experience.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, test, debug, and optimize firmware for memory controllers and SSDs. Main activities include:
- Develop and maintain firmware components in C and assembly for SSD controllers and SoC embedded environments.
- Bench test, reproduce failures, perform root-cause analysis, and file and track bug reports.
- Analyze and optimize performance-critical algorithms and system-level behavior.
- Configure and debug ASIC/register-level issues in collaboration with hardware teams.
- Estimate development effort, plan tasks, and coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Use test equipment and tooling to validate firmware and system behavior.
Requirements
Must-have technical skills and experience, followed by useful additions.
- Must-have: Strong firmware design and debug experience using C and assembly.
- Must-have: Knowledge of NAND flash behavior, flash translation layers, wear leveling, and garbage collection.
- Must-have: Understanding of SLC/MLC/QLC architectures and their impact on SSD behavior.
- Must-have: Strong problem-reproduction skills and experience identifying performance-critical code for optimization.
- Must-have: Proficiency with ARM development toolchains and IDEs (example: Eclipse).
- Must-have: Effective communication and teamwork skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Nice-to-have: Experience with mass-storage interfaces (SATA, SAS, NVMe).
- Nice-to-have: Working knowledge of digital hardware design and experience with oscilloscopes, logic/bus analyzers.
- Nice-to-have: Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools for development, debugging, automation, test generation, or log analysis, applied responsibly.
Education Requirements
BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent required; equivalent practical experience accepted.
