Job Title

Staff Engineer, EDA Business Strategy

Role Summary

Senior individual contributor in Engineering Automation responsible for aligning EDA tool investments with business and technology goals across Micron’s memory product lines (DRAM, NAND, HBM and emerging memories). Acts as primary interface to major EDA vendors and leads vendor strategy, contract negotiations, portfolio planning, and roadmap alignment to support next-generation design challenges.

Experience Level

Senior-level individual contributor. The posting does not state specific years of experience but requires substantial hands-on experience in semiconductor design, EDA tool management, vendor negotiations, and managing large tool budgets.

Responsibilities

Lead EDA strategy, vendor relationships, portfolio management, and cross-functional coordination to ensure tools and infrastructure meet engineering and business requirements.

  • Own strategic relationships with major EDA vendors and emerging tool providers; lead multi-year contract renewals and commercial terms.
  • Evaluate, benchmark, and qualify new EDA tools; run technical workshops, proofs-of-concept, and vendor evaluations with design teams.
  • Define and maintain the enterprise EDA product portfolio across analog/mixed-signal, digital implementation, physical verification, simulation, timing analysis, parasitic extraction, OPC/lithography, characterization, and reliability.
  • Manage license allocation, utilization tracking, forecasting, and license server infrastructure strategy in coordination with IT.
  • Develop 3–5 year EDA technology roadmaps aligned to product and process node roadmaps; perform TCO and build-vs-buy analyses.
  • Lead annual EDA budgets and spending forecasts; advise leadership on cloud EDA, AI-assisted design, and open-source trends.
  • Coordinate with Design Engineering, CAD/CE, IT, Procurement, Legal, and global sites to harmonize tool environments and meet qualification/compliance needs.

Requirements

Core must-have skills and notable preferred skills. (Education items are listed in the Education Requirements section below.)

  • Proven experience in semiconductor design, EDA tool management, CAD engineering, or EDA vendor roles.
  • Deep understanding of semiconductor design flows: custom/analog, digital implementation, physical verification, circuit simulation, timing analysis, parasitic extraction, and tapeout.
  • Experience negotiating enterprise software agreements with EDA vendors and managing multi-million-dollar EDA tool budgets.
  • Strong analytical skills for license utilization analysis, cost modeling, and return-on-investment assessment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical engineering teams and executive leadership.
  • Preferred: familiarity with EDA licensing models, CAD infrastructure (Linux, LSF/HPC, license servers), AI/ML applications in semiconductor design, and vendor qualification/release management processes.

Education Requirements

No minimum academic degree is specified. An MBA or business-strategy experience is listed as a plus. Equivalent practical experience in EDA, CAD, or semiconductor engineering is acceptable.
