Job Title
Staff Engineer, Design Evaluation Engineering
Role Summary
Lead laboratory characterization, validation, and evaluation for Automotive OpenGMSL SerDes products. Work directly with design engineers and system architects to define and execute validation plans, develop test hardware and software, and drive debug to resolution.
Position is based in Beaverton, OR and focuses on high-speed in-vehicle serial link technologies used in automotive, industrial, medical, and robotics applications.
Experience Level
Senior β typically requires substantial prior lab validation experience (examples: 5+ years with a BSEE or 3+ years with an MSEE; see Education Requirements for details).
Responsibilities
Accountable for planning and executing validation and characterization of new products and enabling repeatable test infrastructure.
- Define validation plans covering functional, performance, margin, and robustness requirements with design and systems teams.
- Execute hands-on laboratory testing including silicon bring-up, characterization, debug, and corner analysis of high-speed SerDes ICs.
- Design and build evaluation hardware: boards, fixtures, adapters, and de-embedding structures.
- Develop test software, scripts, automation frameworks, and embedded firmware to enable efficient, repeatable testing.
- Lead or contribute to functional, performance, and system-level debug across digital, analog, mixed-signal, firmware, and system interfaces.
- Analyze complex data sets, summarize results, and communicate findings and recommendations to cross-functional teams.
Requirements
Must-have skills and experience (education details are listed under Education Requirements).
- Proven experience in silicon bring-up, validation, and characterization of ICs in a laboratory environment.
- Experience designing characterization hardware infrastructure, including evaluation boards, fixtures, and de-embedding structures.
- Experience developing test automation and lab software using scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, C/C++, C#).
- Hands-on proficiency with lab instrumentation: high-speed oscilloscopes, VNAs, BERTs, logic analyzers, signal/spectrum analyzers, and power measurement equipment.
- Solid understanding of high-speed digital interfaces, SerDes fundamentals, clocking, jitter, signal integrity, power integrity, and mixed-signal system behavior.
- Demonstrated ability to debug and drive issues to root cause across functional, performance, and system levels.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to document results and present findings to cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to travel up to 10%.
Nice-to-have:
- Hands-on experience with protocols such as Ethernet, PCIe, USB, DisplayPort, CSI/DSI, or HDMI.
- Experience coordinating validation across multiple engineers, labs, or development sites and leading technical projects.
Education Requirements
BSEE (Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering) with 5+ years of relevant experience, or MSEE (Master of Science in Electrical Engineering) with 3+ years of relevant experience; equivalent practical experience accepted.
