Job Title

Staff Engineer AI/ML

Role Summary

Lead RTL and microarchitecture development for an AI-enabled RISC-V CPU core within the MIPS team at GlobalFoundries. The role owns design decisions across functional features, performance, power, area, and verification.

Experience Level

Senior (Staff). See Education Requirements for explicit years-of-experience guidance.

Responsibilities

Deliver microarchitecture and RTL for high-performance vector and matrix-enabled CPU cores and coordinate verification and physical integration.

  • Drive micro-architecture and design of critical CPU core blocks.
  • Design RISC-V vector CPU core features and custom extensions.
  • Design AI-enabled matrix engine to augment the vector datapath.
  • Conduct architectural exploration and produce detailed microarchitecture specifications.
  • Develop, assess, and refine RTL to meet power, performance, area, and timing targets.
  • Support functional verification and contribute to verification strategy; assist performance verification.
  • Collaborate with modeling, physical design, and cross-functional teams on timing, area, reliability, testability, and power.
  • Perform work in a safe and compliant manner and support Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements.

Requirements

Must-have technical skills and experience.

  • Hands-on experience with high-performance processors, vector processors, or GPUs.
  • Datapath design experience including vector and matrix processing for floating-point and integer datatypes.
  • Deep knowledge of microprocessor architecture (fetch/decode, branch prediction, scheduling, register renaming, reorder buffer, out-of-order execution, integer and floating-point execution, load/store, prefetch, vector datapaths, caches and memory subsystems).
  • Proficiency in SystemVerilog, Verilog and/or VHDL.
  • Experience with simulators and waveform debugging tools.
  • Solid understanding of logic design principles and the timing and power implications of microarchitectural choices.
  • Proven ability to translate microarchitectural specs into RTL and optimize for PPA and timing.
  • Experience supporting functional and performance verification and working with verification teams.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across design, modeling, verification, and physical implementation teams.

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience designing RISC-V, ARM, and/or MIPS CPUs.
  • Experience with hardware multi-threading, virtualization, SIMD designs, or vector/matrix-enabled CPUs.
  • Knowledge of low-power microarchitecture techniques and high-performance trade-offs.
  • Scripting experience (Perl, Python) for tooling and automation.
  • SoC-level CPU integration experience and familiarity with safety and security microarchitecture.

Education Requirements

Master's degree with 10+ years of relevant experience, or PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience (as stated in the posting).
